This has been done many times over in TV and cinema. Probably one of my favorite stories of all time. The version I enjoy best is with Albert Finney.
Alec Guiness is great as marley.

Another vote for the Allister Sim version which is a masterpiece. The 1930s version with Reginald Owen playing Scrooge is also very good.

Personally I also love the animated Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.

Ironically two nights ago I watched the latest Disney version with Jim Carrey as Scrooge and I liked it so much that I watched it again last night at a friends house. It is done in that half animation style kind of like in Polar Express which I didn't like. It gives this version of A Christmas Carol a creepy affect but it is done very well and Carrey nails the part of Scrooge!

Scrooged with Bill Murray is another cool modern take on A Christmas Carol as well!

Scrooged with Bill Murray is my favorite and 2nd favorite Christmas movie overall (Christmas Vacation is #1).

Only Christmas movie I own...love Scrooged. Love the scene where he's mixing his rum and Tab drink, with a smidgeon of Tab...
