I'm a big fan of the band playing Dreams especially the Ludlow version. Listening to it now actually.

Is there a version from the current lineup that sticks out above the rest?

Versions I have heard from the current line up have all been great but just looking for the expert, seen a million shows, live on the east coast of the USA and beyond opinions.

Dreams to me is a musical journey where the listener is transported, then is returned when they "climb down off the hilltop, and get back in the race".
So for me, every time I've seen it live was the best because it really does work.
Never got to see Duane play it, but the version I saw Jack Pearson and Dickey play at the Moran Theatre in Jacksonville in 1998 was great. I lucked out and got 3rd row center seats the day of that show, so the Karma was shining on me that day.

haven't seen a million shows
don't claim to be an expert.
they all get to me.
the Bill Evans versions are great.
for me, what Derek did at PSU 10/13/08 is the best I've witnessed. I can still picture it.
Ron Holloway and Warren didn't suck that night either

I always thought the version on the live at the Beacon Theatre DVD was superb:

I also totally enjoyed Clapton's finger picking solo after he dropped his pic (dare I say sounding Derek-ish) was excellent on Dreams with the current band:

I'd never try to nail down a "best version", but we had three extremely fine instances at the Fox run in Atlanta several years ago! While Warren and Derek turned in fantastic solos, I think the deed and title to the song go to Mr. Jack Pearson!

+1 for Jack. My faves of the Jack era: 7/3/97 (ethereal), 8/7/97, 3/14/98, 7/4/98 (otherworldly).

But, back to the OP... current lineup, my fave Dreams has to be Red Rocks 2001. Great great great version. Derek really goes for it in his solo, playing both slide and lead parts. Then when he gets to the end, he plays the traditional slide ending of the solo, and Warren comes in over the top (almost like he's saying "hang on buddy - did you forget we're both supposed to solo?"). Then it's his turn, and he does his usual Warren thing. It's a good version, nearly 20 minutes long. That 2001 tour had a lot of good moments, but that one is a particular fave of mine...

That was the one I was going to say. Jack's version from the Fox Box is pretty amazing. Derek's is too, but Jack just takes it some place else entirely. Warren doesn't do much for me on "Dreams" anymore (especially when he uses a wah pedal), I prefer a Dickey/Warren over just Warren on "Dreams" actually.

The Bill Evans Beacon show was pretty amazing too - definitely the second one that came to mind after Jack's Fox show.

I went to this show and sat in the Balcony. Never saw a show where the crowd was as amped-brothers or anyone.

Dreams is always a favorite of mine. I would have to say the best version from this lineup was on August 20,2005. Chuck Leavell was joining in, took it to another level! His playing on Desdemona earlier in the evening is also amazing.

yea this one is great.. his solo was AWESOME! funny thing is even though this is his youtube site he definitely has the wrong show info for this video.. it says 3/20/11 in Philly when this video was definitely from 3/20/10 at the Uptown..

Derek's solo from the night before was one of my favorites of his that I've seen..

Always love Dreams. Red Rocks September 2009 was one of the best I've caught live. Derek was really paid a great tribute to Duane on that particular night.

I have heard countless live versions and the best I have ever heard when I was present was the first night of the Fox run, 9/24/04.

And this was with Jack taking the lead. If memory serves, Derek left the stage during it.

The three FOX shows are available at Hittin the Note. For three nights, the only song repeated was Dreams. Jack lead, Warren lead and Derek lead. I've been to 25 or 30 shows at the Beacon and these three nights were hands down the best run of shows I've ever experienced.

If you have the coin, give yourself a good Xmas present.

Lee - I went the first two nights of that Fox run and it was indeed as good as ever seen this lineup. Was a special weekend. Another peak in the long history of this band.

Sully - yes, that one on the old site was 7/3/97. Hearing that clip and listening to that version of dreams, it was the first I'd heard of Jack Pearson (in fact I should imagine it was probably the first most people had heard of Jack as it appeared on the site pretty soon after the show, and it was early in his time in the band). I can remember every tiny detail about listening to that for the first time, sat in front of my computer with my headphones on, and it actually brought tears to my eyes. Unbelievable. No other guitarist before or since has ever actually made me cry. Anyway, PM incoming...

J.
