For Miss Kitty (sounds like she got a good show )...

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band may have been touring in support of the new “Ultimate Hits” album release last night, but he really didn’t have to. It wasn’t like the fans didn’t know every song, let alone every lyric, which they sang loudly enough to compete with the speaker system arching overhead.

On the fifth night of the second leg of his 2011 tour, Seger played to 12,000 appreciative fans who packed into Wells Fargo Arena on a cold, rainy night, standing and dancing throughout the whole show.

The deafening roar of the crowd twinkling with flash bulbs hardly needed Seger’s urging as he strutted out in a short sleeve black shirt and jeans. He came well-armed with 13 silver bullets of the band and a state of the art sound and light system, but without the jumbotron screens and pyrotechnics used in so many concerts.

His sparsely adorned multilevel stage was populated with three percussionists, a drummer, a keyboardist, five horn players and three guitar players.

Seger came off as someone enjoying himself, was always moving back and forth, constantly connecting with the audience.
With the release of “Night Moves” in 1976, Seger had his breakthrough commercial success and he hit a sweet spot where rock concerts had morphed into arena rock shows that packed football stadiums. His tight, polished sets were perfect fare for headlining the day-long festivals as promoters capitalized on the success of Woodstock and other rock festivals. True to those roots, Seger and SBB’s performance was dead on, no wasted motion, the lighting was creative but effusive.

Appropriately, he mined “Night Moves,” for the most songs that he played from a single album: Main Street, the title track, “The Fire Down Below,” “Sunspot Baby” and “Come to Poppa.”
But in truth, Seger put on a full show featuring 24 songs, spanning his career from his first album 1969’s “Ramblin’, Gamblin’ Man.” Along with “Night Moves,” the lion’s share of the songs came from “Beautiful Loser,” “Live Bullet,” “Stranger in Town,” and “Against the Wind.”

Seger’s mastery of the live concert is not to serve as a sort of live juke box, spitting out hits. His show is carefully orchestrated to run through the gamut of emotions. He tells poignant stories, such as the one about the tormented musician touring on the road in “Turn the Page,” which was just Seger on a grand piano on a darkened stage and the occasional piercing sax solos -- simply mesmerizing.

He brings up the intensity with the grinding “The Fire Down Below,” and then tones it down with the emotional “Main Street,” only to boost it back up with the rollicking, bouncy “Old Time Rock and Roll” and so on. It was a musical roller coaster with Seger at the front of the stage, his hands up in the air like the kid in the first car.

A crescendo of energy came in the wailing guitar solo at the end of “Travelin’ Man” that leads it in to the intense “Beautiful Loser.” “Nutbush City Limits” was paired with “Come to Poppa,” showing Seger’s love for funky rock tunes with ample use of the wah wah pedal.

Seger saved “Night Moves” till the encore and he played a stripped down version with a simple acoustic guitar on a darkened stage. Even though this reporter has heard the song many times before, it was if the years had melted away and he was 16 again “trying to lose the awkward teenage blues.”

“Rock and Roll Never Forgets” was the perfect ending of a concert where audience certainly hadn’t forgotten Bob Seger and his amazing talent for entertaining.

It was awesome! Didn't have DanB's phone number so I couldn't give him a concert call. Almost called Alan for Turn the Page. It's kind of like Lee and Soulshine.

Oh, and good morning. Back from Des Moines, but I'm extremely tired. I think I haven't had more than 4 hours sleep for about 5 days in a row. Family parties are exhausting at my house.

Hilarious, but no, I was with my sons, so I tried to control myself. There's nothing worse than having your mother embarrass you at a concert. Maybe next time.
