Another giant gone!

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2011/12/rip_hubert_sumlin_legendary_bl. php

Hubert Sumlin, former guitarist with Howlin' Wolf and member of the Blues Hall of Fame is dead at the age of 80. Sumlin was ranked at number 65 in Rolling Stone's greatest guitar players of all time and has been cited as an influence on a wide range of blues and rock guitarists.
He was born in Mississippi, but spent most of his playing career in the well respected Chicago blues scene.

Even at 80, he continued to tour ringing in his birthday last month in New Jersey.

Just got this news from one of Hubert's former guitarist.
VERY sad news indeed. Am glad Hubert was in the spotlight more the last few years.
Ride in peace Hubert. Thanks for your contribution to music, and especially to the blues.

Sad news, another legend has passed. He influenced so many musicians and touched so many hearts and souls.

I saw Hubert 2 months ago at the King Biscuit Blues Festival playing a tribute to Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Pinetop Perkins. He was looking frail, playing while seated and on oxygen. It was amazing to me that he still had drive to go out and play.

I'm gonna miss him..I last saw Hubert live at the Experience Hendrix concert in
2008. He was trading some hot licks with Buddy Guy.

Tonight, in his honor, I'll be breaking out some Howlin' Wolf CD's and
will listen to the ABB's March 26, 2011 Beacon show where Hubert
sat in.

Rest in Peace. A true legend.

RIP Hubert.. a true blues legend. I always love catching the Allmans do Smokestack but given today's news, last night's one seems pretty special in a purely coincidental way...

saw him sit in with the ABB 2005 or 2006? at the Beacon. Then a few months later saw him sit in with Elvis Costello at the same Venue. Had this image of him being like the Phantom of The Opera for that venue

Very few of the greats left

It's a shame, but he left plenty of great music for us to enjoy!! I was actually listening to Howlin' Wolf earlier today. Didn't think I'd get this news in the same day.

RIP Hubert. I too have seen him with the ABB at the Beacon a few times. Truly one of the most influential guitar players America has produced. He will be missed.
