I know this was asked and discussed in a previous thread, but I can't seem to track it down .

Our Yellow Lab passed away 8 years ago and we've decided it's time to do it again .

It will be another yellow lab .

I'd really like to grab a name referencing the ABB , Mule or Dead .
The dog will most likely be a male .
I'm very partial to Cassidy , but not sure about that for a male dog . Then again who really cares .

I'm also open to any Beacon like names or just cool music names .

please discuss and offer up your thoughts .

thanks,
Mike

My very first poodle was a Black Female...she was precious, on the ride home was listening to EAP and Melissa came up and watching the little 9wk old ball of hair, well she became Melissa, nick named Missy.
Nice thread knowing I am not the only pet lover who chooses ABB names.

My son named his Blue Pitbull Duane and his littermate sister is named May. I like to call her Maybelle for Mother Maybelle Carter. Duane knows how to sing the blues when he is unhappy.

I had a black lab (female) in college, we named her Cassidy (after the dead tune). mostly just called her Cassie.

Now I have a female pit, who is named Lola (after Lola Leave your Light on). Kind cool, but pretty much noone gets the reference.

here are some mule tunes i like for a male dog's name
Thelonius Beck
Gordon James
Brazos

We have a Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix that is a male, I wanted to name him Jaimoe, but the wife wouldn't have it. She also wouldn't go for Levon, after Levon Helm. He was finally named Murphy, in reference to Murphy's Bleacher, my favorite place to grab some drinks in Wrigleyville prior to a Cubs game (when I get to Chicago to see my Cubs play).

We also have a female Black Lab with an ABB reference name, Layla.

Mentioned earlier: Samson, Pigpen and Jed. Really like those (for the right size dog, of course).

My submissions: Fillmore. Covers all the bases

mtnjam67,

If you like Cassidy, how about Neal (or Neil) for the a male dog. Better yet, get a male/female pair of Yellow Labs and call the male Neal, and the female Cassidy.

From Wikipedia,

Neal Cassidy was a major figure of the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the psychedelic movement of the 1960s and we all know how the psychedelic movement had an effect on bands such as the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead.

In music
Cassady lived briefly with The Grateful Dead and is immortalized in the "Cryptical Envelopment" section of their song "That's It For The Other One" as the bus driver "Cowboy Neal." A second Grateful Dead song, "Cassidy," by John Perry Barlow, might seem to be a misspelling of Cassady's name; in fact the song primarily celebrates the 1970 birth of baby girl Cassidy Law into the Grateful Dead family, though the lyrics also include references to Neal Cassady himself.

A New York City-based folk duo, Aztec Two Step, in their 1972 debut album memorialized Cassady in the song "The Persecution & Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road)".

The Beat-inspired folk revival band the Washington Squares released a song named "Neal Cassady" on their 1989 album Fair and Square.

The Doobie Brothers guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons refers to Cassady in his song "Neal's Fandango" as his incentive for taking to the road.

North Jersey-based progressive rock band Children of Dust pay tribute to Cassady in their song "Neal Cassady."

The progressive rock band King Crimson released a song named "Neal and Jack and Me" on their 1982 album Beat.

Tom Waits composed and recorded a song named "Jack & Neal" (included in his 1977 Foreign Affairs album) about a trip to California, with Neal Cassady driving in the company of Jack Kerouac.

The Franco-American band Moriarty is named after the fictional character Dean Moriarty that Kerouac created from Neal Cassady.

Fatboy Slim produced a track, "Neal Cassady Starts Here", that appeared as a B-side to the singles Santa Cruz and Everybody Needs A 303.

Singer-songwriter Eric Taylor's 1995 song "Dean Moriarty" describes a character patterned after Neal Cassady.

As for Neil, just think Neil Young, a worthy musician if there ever was one to name a dog after.

"Haynes" is not a bad name for a Lab, but "Warren" would be better. Think about how Warren Haynes is a person and a musician, and think of how Labs are has a breed of dog. With that in mind "Warren" would a great name.

Great suggestions and especially the wiki info on Neal Cassidy .

Our previous Lab was named Tyler by the breeder , she used Aerosmith's band members as dog names and we stuck with it .
