We've had lots of interesting threads about covers: those we like, we hate, we would like to see, etc.

Last night my iPod brought to my attention a song that I don't think has been covered by anyone else and I don't think anyone else would attempt to do it: The Derek Trucks Band's Sahib Teri Bandi. I think it highlighted the best of the DTB and is so unique that few other bands could pull it off.

I am sure you folks have some others, so let them roll.

I saw The Jerry Douglas Band do Sahib Teri Bandi a few years ago. Due to the instrumentation of his band, it was slightly different, but it was pretty damned good.

I think it depends whether or not it involves playing live or a studio cover.

From a studio standpoint, I would say that no one could do justice or recreate something as special as Layla. The magic of those involved at that exact time and all the various layers of it are unique.

That's pretty cool... did he do it on guitar or Dobro?

Jerry played dobro and he had a guitarist in the band, Guthrie Trapp, who was great as well. Also a violinist, if I'm not mistaken. I would like to find a recording of that one.

It was several summers ago, in '06 I think, and Jerry was opening for Paul Simon. Songlines had been released earlier that year? As we found our way to our seats, JD band was tearing up Sahib and I looked at my wife and said, "Holyshit! He's playing dTb!" After the show, I got a CD signed at the merch stand and asked about Sahib and told Jerry I was a big Derek fan. He said, "ME TOO!"

I always thought that the Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" was so perfect as is that it should never be covered.
Then I head Santana cover it, and I knew how right I was!

I guess I would say that no one would should cover the signature songs of a band - no one else should do "Stairway" or "Whipping Post" or "Smoke on the Water" or "Iron Man." However, I allow that some master interpreter could make me eat my words. SRV and Derek & Dominoes both dared to tackle "Little Wing" and succeeded.
