There's some other good songs to. Check Out I Wonder, Time Makes Two, Consequences, Right Next Door, Still Around, etc.

I had great hopes for Cray after that song & album came out and he too has underwhelmed me since. It is a classic song for sure, with other good ones on that record.

At one of our evening camp fire acoustic jams this year at Wanee at the Helen Hilton, a few guys who are in a band together belted out Smoking Gun and it was fabulous. One of the musical highlights of the weekend (we had a few of those highlights at the Hilton, to go along with the fireworks on the real stages). I didn't think it would work in an acoustic set up, but these guys nailed it. Powerful singer. Not sure if they regulars on this site or not though.

Agree about Right Next Door. Something about the lyrics...

Check him out live. He puts on a great show.

I agree! After that great album I was underwhelmed til I saw him live a few years ago. He's really got a nice jazzy sound.

I think people were expecting him to be the next big ,blues ,guitar slinger type guy. Kinda
like George Benson was expected to be the next big jazz guitar player. They kinda lived with that stigma unfortunatley.
Robert just puts a different touch on his music and so does George.
Robert has some very good stuff and I like his tone and feeling he puts into his playing..even though he plays a strat

Smoking Gun is a fun song to play live. I wish I had a nickel for every time I've played it in some smokey dive bar.

Robert Cray is a fine talent. I've heard him branded as, "blues light", but I think that's unfair. For me, he is like Sam Cooke with a guitar. I guess what that means is that he is a better singer (to me) than a guitarist.

But a smart guy once said, "guitar playing ain't no competition or race" (okay, I paraphrased). I do think Robert Cray is a good guitarist - just maybe in a different spectrum than the players who have graced our favorite band.

It sure is a good one . The honorable mention should go to Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark . In sharp contrast to these , there's Living Proof ... chock full of cringe-inducing lyrics .

I just can't get into him, He does have a couple great tunes, but he inconsistant. I've seen him live and it's better there, but its like the same way I feel about Eric Johnson, I can hear the talent in his playing, but it lacks the bite or flare to keep me interested.

I saw him live twice this year - never saw him live before - and he and the band were quite good but he is on the "smooth jazz" side of the blues. He didn't really hold my interest for the whole show. Probably because of the lack of dynamics. Most songs have the same tempo and energy level which can get old pretty fast unless you're wasted. I was not wasted. I can't handle Ratdog or Furthur most of the time for the same reason. Good playing, decent songs, but too slow and too much of the same thing.

I like the Sam Cooke with a guitar reference for Robert Cray, that fits him pretty well.

I'm not sure about this Robert Gray guy though, I'll have to look him up.

Just so no one gets confused here, the name of the song is Strong Persuader. (OOOHH, she was right next door and I'm such a strong persuader). I'd say it's Cray's signature song..........I must have seen him 10 times and he's always done it.

BB King has called him the keeper of the Flame... good enough endorsement for me.

Killer voice & his guitar chops are there as well...

Don't write off Robert Cray unless you've seen him live. He's consistently right on it, both his vocals and his guitar playing, and he's always had a great band behind him. There's a reason Eric always invites him to Crossroads.

His best live performance was in Animal House!

Actually I saw him live once and he was boring. Barely played 45 minutes and didn't even play Smoking Gun. That's when he really turned me off.
