I don't necessarily mean musicals here. What are your favorite movies in which music and musicians play a big role? For example, I'd start with...

Almost Famous
A Mighty Wind
The Blues Brothers
and
This is Spinal Tap

greetings:

this is actually a movie with a great soundtrack... unlike today when the soundtrack is just a marketing / merchandising ploy and/or tool. This soundtrack added to the movie like very few ever have. The exception would probably be "saturday night fever" or "grease" and "west side strory" but those really ain't my cup of tea. The one that spins my top is " EASY RIDER

Laters ON
Brother James

Does "American Pop" by Ralph Bakshi qualify even though it is animated? That is my favorite next to "The Last Waltz","Tommy" and "Almost Famous".

The reissue of The Last Waltz is absolutely phenomenal. It's really worth upgrading to DVD even if you have the old VHS. Check out Robbie Robertson's turn of the 20th centry Gibson harp guitar in the Theme.

I love Easy Rider too!

"Crossroads", from '86. Good story to go along with the Blues soundtrack.

I don't know if I would consider concert videos to be movies - at least that's not how I interpreted the question.

American Pop was great, I've seen that several times. I also liked Crossroads quite a bit, O Brother, Where Art Though, Songcatcher, Amadeus . . .

I liked Rock Star quite a bit. Hair metal was never really my thing, and the plot was cheesy and predictable, but it was really big on nostalgia for me . . . the way the first band talked, how they interracted with each other, etc. I liked Detroit Rock City for many of the same reasons.

You know, I've never seen the Alice's Restaurant movie . . . I should remedy that.

I can watch Best in Show over and over again (and frequently do, thanks to Comedy Central), but A Mighty Wind puts me to sleep - and I love the folk revival scene. I think they just "missed" on that movie.

if you mean concert movies-

gimme shelter
grateful dead movie
song remains the same
rust never sleeps

good soundtrack movies-
where the buffalo roam- creedence, hendrix, temptations, neil young
fear and loathing in lv- youngbloods, rolling stones, jefferson airplane
repo man- black flag, iggy pop, circle jerks, dead kennedys
apocalypse now- sure it has the doors and the stones but i like mickey harts' percussion work especially the scene where the boat travels by the burnt out helicopters and planes tailwing- that screaming metal on metal sound is just spooky

I know this one will have its harsh critics, but Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater from the early '90's had an awesome soundtrack, good story line (for the time), and the use of the music in the movie helped me identify with my rebel side when I was in high school.
