Just an observation. But for a year or so the activity on this forum seems to be in serious decline. Especially the most popular "place": the "Anything Goes" section. But even for present day standards i think that not much has been going on on this beloved forum in recent weeks. I guess the "Beacon Run" season is the most busiest time of the year and the summer period less active but still i wonder.

What would be the reason? Probably a combination of these: No ABB summer tour, too many repetitive topics, many regulars left due to trolls and ugly online fights, people are on a summer vacation, etc.

What else could be a reason and how could this place become more lively again?
Does the website need an overhaul? Any ideas?

The band doesn't tour in the summer now and lots of folks here also hang out on Facebook. I still check in here every day but I don't think everybody does. I still love this site and wish more of the regulars would come back more often but I have no control over it. Funny thing is that the troll situation has never been better here and that is what drove lots of peeps away.

There is definitely less activity now than when I first started posting around the first of the year, but the peeps are a lot friendlier now....I posted just simple stuff back then and nobody ever said anything to me, I mean nuthn, for several months... so there were definitely more trolls...Miss Kitty and CharlieT reached out to me ; I was on the verge of going. Now, I think that now we have a good vibe,a damn great bunch of people, we just gotta get the people on here to check it out and make 'em feel welcome. I wouldn't trade this Family for nothin' now. I confide in more people on this site than to any other people I know. This is my family now.

IMO this is the best this site has ever been, although a bit quieter than the past.

The mods are a superb idea and trolls are gone and some of those who responded and encouraged them are gone.

Yes,FB is big and despite less people coming here(quality not quantity!) the music discussions are intense but fun and generally very civil even when differing.Heck, check out the DB thread and how no foolish "wars" and name calling broke out despite the intensity of people's feelings.

As for old timers here who left, they have FB,it's obviously their choice and is respected.

As midnghtrdr69 said he now gets responses to his posts and i believe some of the cliquish behavior has been significantly minimized or disappeared allowing for most reasonable posts to get responses.

So,keep on keepin' on because this is a cool place to discuss the ABB and all kinds of music. The busy and well responded to threads are still quite active and fun!

Definite all time low. Spent two weeks in Florida and only took me a half hour to catch up here. Only two pages of threads in over two weeks.

Still great people and good times to be had and the troll situation is much better. Best it has been? Not a chance in hell. I can understand how people who only joined in the last couple of years might think so but the early years are the best. Sure some left during the troll wars and Facebook has become home for many instead but some of the best left long before the "troll wars" sadly. I guess they had insight as to what was coming. I long for the days when people like Clay, Denza, Dino, Mark and others were here regularly. My buddy Stephen will likely agree about all the great music discussions we had. These people left when the only troll was Dean for a variety of reasons. Too bad.

I recently took a look at the top posters and was amazed at how many are gone. Sad.

But still a favorite site for me and glad you all still come around. Well most of you anyway.

Hope some of the oldies return one day and look forward to the new ones.

Dutch - I think you hit on a lot of key possibilities. One of the things in my opinion is how many times can you have the same discussion about a given topic?

I think the Guest Book here has turned into Facebook. There used to be lots of good music talk there but not anymore.

Still love reading the threads that discuss music though. I am amazed at how much I have learned about music from so many folks here. Hopefully I have been able to impart some info myself.

Still a great site.

I think maybe this phase of the site may lay the groundwork for a resurgence. It was awful there for a while. Things are much better now, including the vibe. I'm hopeful some long time posters will return and some new posters will be attracted. The diminishing schedule of the band has to be a factor.

I remember when I found the anything goes forum how I looked forward to my daily visit.
I think the reality that the ABB will probably never perform outside the NE US has had an
effect. At least with me it has. I still check in every day but there are times i don't find anything
worth reading. The troll thing definitely had a negative effect. I think some people played a dual role as cool guy and troll and were found out when ip addresses were checked. If the ABB
announced a miny tour of ATL ,LA, SF,the activity would pick up. I don't see it happening.
It's hard to get excited about about a casino show 1000 miles away.If you can do the Beacon great but a lot of us don't have $3000 to spend on a concert these days and thats what I estimate it would cost me. I'll keep coming back out of habit. I still have the fantasy that I will
log in one day and see the headline" ABB announce three night run at Fox in ATL. See ya later.

Absolutely bro -- far less of a conversational vibe on the site & it's been that way for awhile -- it's almost two weeks since a post on Gregg's Bigg Daddy's thread, just as an example -- but things are cyclical and come & go -- it's a cool website & thank you Rowland & Lana

IMO one way to improve the chatter around here is to do away with the Beacon posting forum.

When I came on board here at HTW I really enjoyed the excitment surrounding going to the Beacon. There we're countdowns, first song chats, etc.

Now that that section is set aside I would bet many of the new folks do not visit the Beacon posting so they miss out the conversations surrounding an awesome event.

I know I don't take the time to visit that forum because I haven't been able to get back to NYC since 2007.

What's really something is when you start putting together a mental list of good people you don't "see" around here anymore. It gets pretty big in a hurry.

I have been wondering for a while now as to whether this great place is slowly dying. I sure hope not.

I check how many "registered users" are online frequently, and usually its 7 or 8. Right now its 14, which is the highest I have seen for quite a while. (Just looked again. Down to 9)

Dickeys site is even worse.

This is sad.

I think the vibe is much better than it was a year or two ago. That said, I miss quite a few regular posters. There is definitely not the volume of posting that there was. I assume they post on Facebook - I don't go there. This site has given me so much, I can't thank Rowland and Lana enough. I've met so many wonderful people that I know I will be in touch with for years. I have also traded and received a TON of great music. I seem to receive much more than I give, no matter what I do. This just goes to show you what generous hearts are to be found here.

Go to Members List and choose sort by number of posts. It is like a HOF for HTW. So many of the top posters are gone and amazingly some are still near the top after a few years of being gone.

Also gree 100% bout the generosity of this site. I still get suprise packages coming from all sorts of great people. Some that don't even post here anymore.

Stephen
Those classic threads with yourself, Mark and others reminded me of things that I had not put on in years and other great suggestions that I picked up from you guys. Miss him.

There used to be a lot of conversation on the site reviewing shows and folks posting that they were in search of certain shows. I can't remember the last time I saw an 'In Search Of Thread". Not complaining about vines, but now, pretty much all the ABB shows end up in a vine all you do is post to the vine and wait, rather than perhaps getting into a conversation about a particular show.

A couple of observations from someone who is a longtime reader, but fairly recent/infrequent contributor. Mostly agreeing with what has already been stated.

• ABB not touring as much.

• Gregg is off the road until he has fully (I hope) recovered -- and many of the Gregg fans are now on a Gregg Allman Fans site on FB.

•Derek , Jaimoe and Warren and their bands have fan websites and FB pages.

• The Guestbook seems to be a fellowship of old friends and while I would not call it unwelcoming, per se ... I for one, always feel like an 'outsider' there.

• Login. Checking to see who is online at any given time can be misleading -- I frequently visit, but do not login each time, just when I post something. I do think that feature may limit some participation. It is not a big effort to login but it does impede spontaneity somewhat.

• There are so many places to go on the internet -- it has become a very large, very busy place. More time "out and about" -- less time at 'home". I guess.

• Oh yeah -- and then there are the twitter users who seem to prefer to speak in tweets.

I should add, I guess, that i am not on FB, Google Plus, Myspace (is that still around?) or Twitter ... but clearly many folks are.

Thanks for all the reactions. Cool to see that although many fine folks are posting and visiting less then they used too they state that HTW still means a lot to them. And i agree
we can't thank Rowland and Lana enough (and the administrators too for making this place almost troll-free)!

Just a few suggestions:

- i still like the way the website looks including the blue colors used. Doesn't need to
change for me but maybe changing / updating a few of the images.
- an occasional quiz or lotery with some cool ABB or related stuff to be won.
- already discussed in another topic: a marketplace for fans to sell / swap stuff with
other fans if there's a majority of forum users who think there's a need for such a place.
But i think the administators will not like to be involded in any buyer/seller arguments
so rules need to be properly outlined.
- a weekly or montly poll (with the posibility that forum members can make suggestions
regarding the contents of those polls)
- maybe every now and then a HTW/HTN interview could be conducted with an ABB
band member or from any of the "family bands"; also with an option for fans to post
suggestions / questions to be asked.
- like suggested in one of the reactions: close down the Beacon section so those posts
will be part of the "Anything Goes" section again
- close some of other lesser used sections of the forum. Those that hardly see any traffic
or are only used for beefing up the number of posts.

Just my 2 cents.

ABBDutch--a fine thread and some excellent comments and suggestions.

I may be wrong but there seems to be a few more newer folks here who contribute musically quite nicely.Maybe I notice them more now,but I find I learn a lot here.

In fact, the musical "arguments" are great, besides being fun and interesting they actually teach me a lot and at times,my opinions change....

A perfect example being the many debates about TTB--well while we spent a few months arguing the band got better and better and way tighter and my mind began to wrap itself around their sound and intent...now,I'd love to see them live.....all because I really listened based on the stuff others fought me on...it's my nature...I like to argue....as a researcher debate, argument and strong differences tend to result in new discoveries...same for me in music....I gotta argue it out to discover it....

What better place then here?!!!

So,things evolve and change & different people come and go,but the road of music goes on forever....

With a few of Dutch's suggestions and the ideas of others the place can pick up the pace...but we got a good thing here for those who dig it and despite my differences with Rowland & Lana over the years,I owe them a debt of gratitude for this place....

I do with some people would come back...but it's all nice here now and the mods have really cleaned up the crap....Thankfully I keep up with Jack and Peach Gary(!) and others on the phone and my good buddy Alan's kindness and friendship know no limits...

Now,I'll be relying on this place to fill some idle opiate blitzed time as I'll soon be recuperating from some surgery.....love ya all...and love the music and the bros...Duane and Berry remain near to my heart particularly as I rejoiced in 9/16/71 over the past few days.....

i think the non-touring thing has plenty to do with it. people wanna talk about upcoming shows, read reviews of current shows, and post their own reviews when they see the tour...

you don't work, the fans don't play...
