I think Jim Croce could be considered folk. I love his music.

As for modern day folkies, my favorite is Todd Snider.

Mississippi John Hurt

Generally considered a bluesman, but tagged a folkie by blues purists (I always thought blues was a folk form?).

Good nod to the Brits, but how can you omit Bert Jansch? He was and still is currently
the King of the Great British Folk Revival.

I omitted Bert Jansch because he had already been mentioned at least twice!

I will add Pentangle however!

And Donovan.

Wow, you're right, Donovan wasn't here ! And you're also right Bert Jansch was already mentioned. I'm a rabid Bert Jansch fan, my favorite musician period, forget the folk category !

Brits rule for folk. Kate Rusby is a more recent British folk giant. Chloe Matharu is a recent arrival on the Scottish folk scene, IMO right there with Jacqui McShee, Sandy Denny, et al , not mainstream yet, record found only at her site:

There's a lot of great young talent on the UK folk scene but they would be unknown to most readers - Chris Wood, Spiers & Boden, Kate Rusby as you mention, Bella Hardy, Ruth Norton ....

It's tough to make a living in folk clubs so it's good to give them some attention!

Nanci Griffith, no contest!

The wing and the wheel... they carry things away
Whether it's me that does the leavin' or the love that flies away
The moon outside my window looks so lonely tonight
Oh, there's a chunk out of it's middle... big enough for an old fool to hide

Where are all the dreamers... that I used know?
We used to linger beneath street lamps in the halos and the smoke
The wing and the wheel... came to carry them away
Now they all live out in the suburbs where their dreams
Are in their children at play

There's a pale sky in the east... all the stars are in the west
Oh, here's to all the dreamers... may our open hearts find rest
The wing and the wheel are gonna carry us along
And we'll have memories for company... long after the songs are gone

John Renbourn and Martin Carthy are also legends on the British folk scene and Fairport Convention are giants of the genre, the album Liege and Lief rermains the Sgt Pepper of folk rock IMHO
