You guys all know where I've stood on the "Dickey Divide" since 2000. I've always thought that Dickey got a raw deal - that he was unfairly fired from a band that was as much his as it was anyone's.

Well, last night at the City Winery, Dickey went a long way towards changing my mind. He was so bad - so awful - that my wife I had to leave during the first set... "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," no less.

Let's forget for a second about the dozens and dozens of missed notes and botched cues (of which there were many; many of the classic harmony lines were indistinguishable in their sloopiness, all at the blame of Dickey, who played a good portion of "Let me Ride" in Ab [which, for any musicians here, is unlistenable]); what about the construct of the band?

Why THREE Les Pauls through THREE Marshalls? What happened to the delicateness of Dickey's music? This was like a hammer through broken glass. None of the guys listened to the other.

Listen to the Fillmore "Liz Reed." The band eases into the song like a thick fog slowly rising over a swamp. Last night, Dickey and the band just jumped into everything long and strong. There wasn't a single nuance. It was loud, sloppy, uncoordinated bar music from a man who practically pioneered the notion of jazz sensibility in a rock setting.

Pedro Arevalo? Are you kidding me? He may as well have been strumming his bass as he didn't form a single pocket all night. He just noodled away, playing lead bass as Dickey solo'd, and Duane and Andy Aledort played heavy, chugging rhythms.

The drummers were intense and loud when they should have laid back. They also played on top of each other all night... a far cry from Butch and Jaimoe.

I understand that Dickey is nearly 70 and that he's been through the ringer. That said, I paid $250 for 3 tickets to a show by a man who had no business being on stage. He was either drunk or showing the lasting effects of a man who has spent a lifetime being drunk.

His playing was terrible. His band was terrible. The audience didn't seem to mind, which made me even madder. The Allmans and all related bands should be the best musicians in the world, bar none. They set such a high standard than any one of the brotherhood who dips below said standard without regard for an audience that's been loyal for almost half a century should be ashamed.

I saw Gregg in January and the dude just gets it. He laid back. The band gave the music space; nuance and musicianship aplenty.

Dickey was so bad last night that I am certain that I will never, ever see him again.

Thats dissappointing. I wanted to go but when I saw what they were charging to see him I passed and I did it because for 85 bucks or whatever it was I did not know what I would get. Seems like you answered the question.

Sorry you paid all that money. Man it is a shame to hear continued bad reviews for the man in the hat. Still and always will love him but this is getting sad.

Sounds like Dickey has gone the way of David Allan Coe, in that you'll either get a great show or a "trainwreck" show. Not a great way to keep what's left of "what use to be" a great career going. Gregg has certainly shown that as he gets older that he'll be still be a "class act" and appreciate his audiences by delivering a quality show. It's sad that Dickey can't have the same respect for himself and his audience that Gregg has for his.

I've seen him twice in the last decade. One was awesome (Gathering of the Vibes 2003), one was mediocre (Penns Peak last winter).

This is unfortunate but not surprising. It seems these days it's hit or miss with Dickey. I'm a big Betts fan, and I'll always admire what he's given us - great playing and writing for lots of years. Not many can write the intricate and quality instrumentals Dickey has. The last time I saw him the volume was so loud that the instruments totally overshadowed the vocals. Yep, a sea of Marshalls at volume 10. The dynamics get lost in the noise.

Last time I saw him he was terrible but the crowd didn't have a clue, they thought it was great.

I was with some taper friends and they were stunned at how bad it was.

I've seen lots of Dickey shows over the years and that was the first clunker, but from the reviews I've seen elsewhere, I was on a lucky streak.

I've googled around looking for another review, but it appears the New York Times didnt bother to send a guy out to review Dickeys show.

Considering the history...Fillmore East and all the ABB Beacon shows...you would thing they would cover it.

I also am very sorry to read this. It is my humble opinion that Dickeys band is top notch. Pedro is a fantastic bass player, and I know for a fact that James Varnado is one of the best drummers that has ever walked. But maybe I'm just biased about James.

It is sad, very honestly sad, even heartbreaking....but if even one word is true....and just an FYI, don't remember the year, but I also saw Dickey throw a Les Paul probably 20 ft., and storm off stage during Jessica in which he had missed more notes than I could count. Luckily, the drum section turned it into a drum solo...until Dickey came back. Love the man with all my heart, but this is like watching Teki die, slowly and painfully...painful to Him and to me. Starting to sound like Hank Williams Jr. reviews. It is simply heartbreaking.

Dickey sounds like Dylan, and that's never a good thing. But as for his playing...it sounds like his brain and fingers aren't riding the same wave. Hello beer.

Just watched the Southbound videos. I usually keep my mouth shut the last couple of years in the Dickey threads but after watching those videos I have to agree that it is a very sad thing. Just time to hang it up IMO. Not only does Dickey sound out of it, the band doesn't sound very tight at all. The ABB set such a high standard that there is just no way to compare the two. Those who know me know that I complained about Dickey and his band when he had just left the ABB. Didn't think they were very good back then but this even pales in comparison to that! Very sad to say because I love and respect him for all of his contributions to both the ABB and music in general but I'd rather go to see the Peacheaters than Great Southern at this point if that is what they are gonna deliver for those prices. Still think Dickey could rebound musically if he would just drop the booze but at this point I doubt he ever will. Luckily for him there are still loyal fans who will like his music no matter how it sounds. To each their own.

My City Winery show got cancelled on Sunday due to the storm and as I could not make the rescheduled Tuesday late show, I was refunded. I think I was lucky. I will stick with my many great memories of Dickey's guitar at The Beacon shows.
