Oh man...hard to say. Anything off of AFE or EAP. That's doesn't take into account the life shows not commercially released.

As a drummer myself, these two guys have definitely influenced me...There's
way too many songs to choose from in Jaimoe's and Butch's 40+ year career,
but here's a few:

1. Their drum solo section in "Mountain Jam."
2. Jaimoe's playing on "High Falls."
3. The drum break in "Pegasus."
4. I'm a big fan of the drum work on the "Shades of Two Worlds"
and "Seven Turns."
5. The drum work by both men on "Instrumental Illness."

Other recordings:
1. Butch's drum work on the "Frogwings" CD
2. The first "Sea Level" CD and the Jaimoe's Jasssz Band CD's

And a special shout-out to Marc Quinones, who's been spicing up the
percussion section since 1991. Love his work as well.

woodsdweller, just curious what you think of that drum part in From The Madness Of The West?

I wonder whose idea it was to get Mark in, what made them decide to get an extra set of drumsticks going?

Go and see Jaimoe with his jazz lineup for some great drumming. I have seen them a number of times including the Iridium show and the HTW show a few years ago and it is great to see Jaimoe play by himself. He is such a cool cat as well.

I heard Butch persuaded him to join a "rock band" when he was with Spyro Gyra. Not sure if it is true or not.

I really like the Mountain Jam from Ludlow Garage.

Also like Jaimoe's work on the first Sea Level record.

That is true. I either read it, or saw an interview with Marc where he said it. He'd never even heard of the ABB before he came on. He sure does fill out the sound nicely. A great fit.

Mtn Jam is the first thing that jumps out in my mind....LAFE, but as Big Dave said "hard to say"..so many great works of art with those two, and also must give a shout out to Marc Q who has really spiced up things, and to Paul Riddle who is the unforgotten one who has contributed many good parts over the years.

Something I don't hear much about is Jaimoe's conga playing. Listen to 3-20-71 Mtn Jam. Very impressive imo.

I believe it is on EAP where Jaimoe is credited with playing the "Monkey skulls"...always wondered about that!

Great point, and I personally share your opinion. Jaimoe's conga playing has always been on the top shelf. (IMO)

Are some of my favs.Don't be offended but marc doesn't do much for me,in the right band he would be vital but the other 2 guys dominate .

Jaimoe doesn't dominate enough IMO -- but I dig his playing a lot as it is...
...me too Vince -- monkey skulls, hmmmmm -- IIRC, I think Dickey was credited w/the monkey skulls on Les Brers -- could be wrong though
speking of Les Brers, a good Butch/Jaimoe solo from the Dreams tour is 7/89 Hartford -- haven't listened to that tape for quite some time -- but the sound isn't bad & they play about a 15-or-so min. solo

cool, posts, agreed on all the solo playing, Frogwings/BHLT, Sea Level/JJB, all the cool recordings Marc's been on...these are some musicians -- JaBuMa brAAA -- It's A Freight Train!!!!

Well I guess I might as well add my 2 cents too. I think the Nassau 1973 Archive show really is a gem for listening to Butch and Jaimoe interact. The earlier productions had a lighter drum sound to my ears. Maybe more of a jazz sound rather than rock. Jaimoe gets buried in the mix these days.

I love the energy Marc brings to the band but at times feel it gets too repetitive.

Having said that I love what they do and thankful that they do it.

Steve

I believe it's on Les Brers. Maybe elsewhere too.

I'll vote for Leave My Blues at Home. Very funky groove, laid down by the whole band.
And into the outro at the end. Both on the record, and live shows too.

Another pounder here and for me its the multiple time signatures in many of the tunes and the ease in whcih they can shift gears. Whipping post with the 11/8, 6/8 and 4/4 is incredible in its own right. I have been playing for years and covering the Brothers has always been a great challange as a drummer whcih I love and on some occasions hate. Hats of to both of them and Marc for proving once again that without no rhythm there ain't no song!!!
