Several years ago there was talk of the two doing something together, but sadly it has not materialized. They seem to be on divergent paths right now.

Considering McLaughlin's recent interest in Jimmy Herring, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a part of the inevitable Derek/Jimmy collaboration that we keep hearing about.

McLaughlin and Herring are on the same record label, and Jimmy told me about getting a phone call from the label president, who then said "I've got somebody here who wants to talk to you" and handed the phone to McLaughlin. The Artist Formerly Known As Mahavishnu gushed about how much he liked Jimmy's solo album Lifeboat, and Jimmy was as excited as a little kid to hear such praise from one of his musical idols.

How about this for a band?

Jimmy's band was supposed to open for a few shows of McLaughlin's last tour, they could have had some tasty sit-ins.

I would not complain about going to see a band with those members

I'm with you Rob! What a fantastic band that would be!!

When Derek and Jimmy finally get into Derek's studio to blow out that jam for a record, let's hope they pull John and the others in....

Glad you like the lineup Effie See, we can agree sometimes!

Upon further reflection, a serious world percussion guru like Zakir Hussain would also be a good addition to the "dream band" posted above. I'm thinking a sort of Bitches Brew vibe, very polyphonic without being too busy or cluttered.

Maybe throw in some New Orleans cats too, Irvin Mayfield or Nicholas Payton on trumpet would add a lot to the festivities. James Singleton on bass and Johnny Vidacovich on drums would be a killer rhythm section, if Derek wanted something different than Oteil/Sipe.

Then again, you could just lock Derek and Jimmy in a room together for a couple of hours, and that would probably be fantastic too

certainly would be interesting--i loved the work they did together on Jazz is Dead--Derek sits in on a song or 2 & it's quite beautiful....

Anything in this vein would be a very heavy duty instrumental band (only Oteil sings, unless Sipe does as well) and I think is something that the DTB fans who have been disappointed with TTB would much rather see (and hear).

Jan Hammer would make an interesting alternative to Hancock and it would be cool to see him with McLaughlin again.

A band like this would have no trouble attracting good crowds.

Whenever Derek or Jimmy talk about their long-awaited project, it always sounds like instrumental music to me. I don't know if either of them have ever said it explicitly, but it never even occurred to me that such a project would have any vocals at all. I certainly wasn't thinking of a vocalist when I made up my dream band lineup earlier in this thread.

I didn't mean to hijack the original thread, but Jimmy just seems like the obvious bridge, the guy who could help get Derek and McLaughlin in the same room together.

It seems like a logical extension to me, not a hikjack. I would be very happy to see a band with ANY two of the three guitar players mentioned in this thread.

Those two guys, along with Jimmy and the other mentioned artists would surely make great music, bet the vibe and groove would be something to behold. And I would definitely support a tour, an album, IMHO it would make for great music. Maybe one day...

Derek/Jimmy/McLaughlin would be crazy. I can't even imagine the kind of music they would make.
