E Street Band Saxophonist Clarence Clemons has Suffered a Stroke
His condition remains uncertain

By Andy Greene
June 12, 2011 9:56 PM ET

Rolling Stone can confirm reports that Clarence Clemons has had a stroke. The news broke this evening at 411.com, which reported that Clemons is "seriously ill after a stroke at his home in Florida." We have no information on the severity of the stroke, but we have independently confirmed that the E Street Band saxophonist has suffered a stroke.

Clemons has gone through a series of medical ailments - mostly involving his back and knees - over the past decade. He hasn't missed any concerts, but the conditions caused him to suffer a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort. "That last tour was hell," Clemons told Rolling Stone in February. "Pure hell." In the past year Clemons had both knees replaced and spinal fusion surgery. "The timing was perfect because it didn't interfere with a lot of stuff that was going on in my life," he says. "It made me stronger, and for the past year I've been in physical therapy a few days a week working my ass off to get back in shape. I'm walking better now, though I still use a cane and crutches. But now I'm having hip problems again. I don't know why."

Clemons last performed with Springsteen and the E Street Band in December of 2010 at Asbury Park's Carousel House for a special web broadcast taping. He performs on two songs on Lady Gaga's new album Born This Way, and just last month played "Edge of Glory" with her at the season finale of American Idol. He was supposed to play the national anthem before Game 2 of the NBA Finals last week, but a hand injury forced him to cancel at the last minute. He watched the game in the stands with Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning.

When Rolling Stone spoke to Clemons in February he said that virtually nothing would take him off the road with Springsteen and The E Street Band. "As long as my mouth, hands and brain still work I'll be out there doing it," he said. "I'm going to keep going 'til I'm not there anymore. This is what's keeping me alive and feeling young and inspired. My spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy told me that my purpose in life is to bring joy and light to the world, and I don't know any better way to do then what I'm doing now."

We'll have more information on Clemons' medical condition as the story develops.

His sax solo on Jungle Land is one of the greatest in Rock music.

I hope The Big Man will be okay. Time to give Born To Run a spin.

That's a cool story, David. It's always nice to hear that my heroes are nice people in real life too.

Been a fan of CC for almost 40 years......I'll pray for his full recovery.

Nils Lofgren just had hip replacement surgery, too. It's obvious R&R is hazardous to your health....don't try this at home, kids.

I read on another message board that USA Today and showbiz411 is reporting members of E Street have been advised to get to Fla. quickly. That does not sound good.

Prayers and thoughts for the Big Man.

The latest report is that Clemons has had two brain surgeries in a Florida
hospital but is "responsive and in stable condition," and also noting
that Clarence is paralyzed on his left side.

People never think it will happen to them, but it can. One of the things that can save your life is to keep some aspirin and water (a small bottle is fine) next to your bed. If you have a stroke you may not be able to get up to go get anything, the aspirin can help you till you get to a hospital and get some TPA (tissue plasminogen activator) - TPA is the stuff that will help prevent the blood clots that can form and kill ya when you have a stroke.

Even if you are not in the bed, you should probably keep some aspirin with you, get a small pill box, vitamin box or even put some in some foil and keep it in your wallet, just in case. That simple act can save your life.

Clarence needs some TLC. I think we all know what "hell" means in relation to touring.

Sleep deprivation does a lot of damage to the body. I hope he takes the time he needs to truly be relaxed and refreshed. That can take 4-6 months of not working when someone is truly exhausted.

True about the stroke and aspirin Gina. But, from the description it sounds like Clarence had a bleeding stroke (with the emergency surgery) For the vast majority, however, Aspiring can help. Also, get to the Emergency Room ASAP since damage become permanent after only a few hours.

Most the reports on Clarence sounded like he was doing a lot better, squeezing with his left hand after initially being paralyzed on that side during the stroke etc. but there is something from the Washington Post that says from six hours ago that they called the band and told them all to get down there as soon as possible.

Clarence is holding his own according to reports. For official updates and also to send well wishes here's the 411.

This is the fan site for the band. Bruce has a statement here.
