Just sleepless again wondering.......What are the first five you think the average Joe or Jane on the street would come up with? First five that come to mind.... Famous or Infamous..... ( not taste wise. just the top five everybody knows)

Here are mine: 1. Ringo Starr 2. Tommy Lee 3. Dave Grohl 4. Alex Van Halen 5. Phil Rudd
not sure why these are my pics.
I think the average schmoe on the street would say Ringo and Tommy Lee and then be hard pressed after that.

Now or history?

Ringo, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich and Tommy Lee (based on Pam, Porn, tabloids and reality shows.)

Not saying they are or are not the best. Just very famous drummers.

It isn't about the best, it was most famous. I could survey 100 average people on the street and the vast majority would know who Tommy Lee is and very few would have a clue who Ginger is. No knock on Ginger as he has been out of the spotlight for quite some time.

Love his playing. Check out the BBM videos I linked on the Clapton plays gary Moore thread.

I'd agree that's a pretty good list. Tommy Lee honorable mention, lol

It seems to me that that only applies to the average rock fan who enjoys classic rock. Most fans of modern rock will not have heard of any of the above except for Ringo and Bonham, and the latter only because modern hard rock/nu-metal stations also tend to play a few Zeppelin songs.

I find it bizarre that I'm the only one to mention Ulrich. I mean, granted, he's known just as much for being a public figure (READ: as*hole) as being a drummer, but he's still maintained his fame quite well because all of the Korn Kidz love him.

Most of the people I went to high school with had never heard of The Who, much less individual members.

You probably better throw Phil Collins into the discussion...."average Joes" are gonna mention him pretty quickly....despite that 'pop schlock' that he's put out over the years for the most part. Betcha get some Don Henley mentions too....

Remember, the question was "most famous....."

Carmine Appice is not a "name" in modern times.
