Well, people seem to have their mind on soul-oriented material right now due to the release of Warren Haynes' new album, I decided to strike while the iron is hot and recommend a new soul/R&B artist I've discovered recently: Gina Sicilia. The girl has a big, beautiful (but also tough) alto, and does not suffer from attempting to sing like a soprano like many altos do. I have a copy of her latest album, Can't Control Myself, and some of it is jaw-droppingly good, the rest is very consistently solid material. It's also worth checking out for Dave Gross who plays a ridiculous amount of instruments (guitar, drums, percussion, piano, electric organ, and more) and produces the album.

http://youtu.be/4HAAIxRC8UA This is an extended sample of the opening tune on the Can't Control Myself album which shows off a brilliant, bluesy swagger and a wonderful voice.

You can also hear some extended samples at her website: http://www.ginasicilia.com/fr_home.cfm

Enjoy!

Wonderful. Due to geographical and health reasons it will be a long time before I can make it to a live show, but I hear that she's great live. She's certainly great in the studio.

I'm glad to see that someone already knows this artist, but I hope she makes at least one new fan out of this.

Back when I was still doing Myspace, she was on my friend list. Aside from having good pipes, she's fairly easy on the eyes, too.

Excellent. Do you happen to recall what song(s) they were playing?

I listened to the album again tonight, and it seems to get better every time I hear it. According to my last fm charts I've listened to it ten times already (I got it less than a week ago). This is quite rare!

Sorry, but I don't remember. I usually listen on Saturday afternoons. It seems they play more new stuff, then BB King interviews with songs by some of his influences - love that.

I was listening to Bluesville last night and heard Gina! It was a song called, I think, "Crazy? " or Crazy about you baby" I think it's on her new album. AMAZING.
More people need to hear about this girl, seriously. She's right up there with the best.
Y'all agree?
How could would it be if she opened for ABB? She's got that gritty, soulful voice that would match perfect. http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules/XForum/images/smilies/thumbup.gif

I'm glad you like her stuff and are so enthusiastic. That comment about opening for ABB is interesting; after hearing the material on her album I've been contemplating dropping by her Facebook page and suggesting that she cover Soulshine. I think a mellow, bluesy soul arrangement of that tune could be fascinating and she has the right type of voice for it.

The song you're thinking of is a Willie Dixon tune (though you wouldn't know it!) called Crazy 'Bout You Baby.

Yeow!!! She is very easy on the eyes. If her disc has her pic on it, I'll buy it

I liked her with Debbie Davies also, that was a good song.

Well, I disagree with the reviewer about the genre (aside from the twangy tone of the acoustic guitars, I hear almost no country on that album), but it's certainly an interesting review, and he's right that her material is not blues proper. She fits pretty squarely into neo-soul/R&B, I think.

For better or for worse blues magazines seem to have taken over the R&B/soul review and news scene. On the one hand, I'm happy to see a variety of music covered and to see that artists who would otherwise be unknown get a voice in print media. On the other hand, some of the material tends to be judged unfairly for not being blues simply because it happens to be on a blues record label. Gotta take the good with the bad, I suppose.

If I remember correctly, she contacted us to be reviewed. We do try to cover a lot of blues-oriented ground though. Popular media considers Beyonce to be R&B so someone has to pick up the slack

Just to clarify, I'm not criticizing blues magazines for covering soul and traditional R&B, I just dream of those magazines being able to afford an extra writer or two who specialize in those genres to make sure they get a fair shake. I'm also not surprised that she contacted blues magazines for the purpose of being reviewed, as a traditional soul/R&B artist really doesn't have anywhere else to go these days other than jazz magazines which make for less of a fit than a blues mag. Thank you for the interesting information.
