i am no fortune teller but my guess is that this new band is a break and change for Warren and he will return to the mule ...seems to make sense to me

Mule IS doing a night at Mountain Jam.. So I do believe this is just a "break"
Though I must say, I LOVE what I have seen and heard from the WHB

The Mule are severe road warriors and I really doubt Warren would let that band slide after working so hard for so many years establishing a loyal fan base. I personally would feel really let down if he dropped it now, and I sure don't think he will. From what I've read, Man in Motion is a soul record, so it sounds to me like Warren is just doing what great musicians do, exploring a different side of his muse for awhile, then in my opinion he'll return to Gov't Mule..........NOTHING like a live Mule show!

It's remarkable how a band can take a single year off the road and it feels like they are breaking up. Warren has said many times this is just a year off. He has clearly indicated his intent to return to Gov't Mule, a band that just celebrated it's 15th anniversary and was flying on all cylindars. I expect them to be back on tour in 2012 and nothing I have seen or read leads me to believe otherwise. The music Warren is doing with this band is not for the Mule. It necessitated a break.

Its allllll good.

Numerous guests sat in with Warren Haynes Band at New Orleans’ Mahalia Jackson Theater last night. While Haynes’ annual JazzFest performances are known for their sit ins, last night’s show was particularly noteworthy for featuring several of the musicians who appear on his new soul-oriented album Man in Motion.
Man In Motion bassist George Porter Jr. emerged near the start of the show for the album’s ninth track “Take A Bullet” as well as Gov’t Mule’s “Beautifully Broken.” Soon after, fellow New Orleans musician Walter “Wolfman” Washington sat in on the R & B classic “Ain’t No Love In The Heart of The City” and Bill Withers’ “Use Me.” Later in the set, Trombone Shorty made guest appearances on Allen Toussaint’s “On Your Way Down” and “Feel Like B. U. S. H.” The latter song also featured funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band horn section emerged early in Warren Haynes Band’s second set for “John the Revelator” and a take on “Man In Motion” that also featured Ivan Neville, Neville—who plays keyboards on Man In Motion —remained onstage for album tracks “Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday” and “Sick of My Shadow.”
The second part of Warren Haynes Band’s set focused on the guitarist’s longtime live staples and featured the members of Gregg Allman’s solo band. Keyboardist Bruce Katz sat in on “Soulshine” while both saxophonist Jay Collins and guitarist Scott Sharrard appeared on “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.” The set later came to a close with a version of the New Orleans staple “St. James Infirmary Blues” that featured guitarist Anders Osborne, harmonica player Smoky Greenwell and members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Haynes will perform at Preservation Hall tonight.

It never has to be history as Matt and Warren can put it together at any time. Whether or not it is with the same lineup is another question. The time frame of that would depend on how successful the WHB project is. I guarentee that both Warren and Stax are hoping for higher sales than Govt Mule has been moving. If that happens, he would be foolish not to continue. Of course Warren has no reason to rule out a Govt Mule return. That would be foolish also and another bad business move.

Other members have projects going also so they obviously can't afford to sit and wait. Govt Mule is Warren, Matt and whoever they allow on stage. One year can easily turn into two or more in the music business. Warren may sell to the exact same people as he does with the Mule or may crack radio to a degree and he already has more promo and hype behind the release than Mule releases. Watch for him in a few magazines in the near future. I hope it works for Warren and he gets both the recognition and financial success he deserves. The hard part for Mule die-hards is that the more successful the WHB is - the longer the wait for the Mule.

As a side question, if they came back with a different lineup who would you want? I would love a return to the power trio lineup personally and let Warren get his keyboard fix from the WHB. I would love to see Porter full time in fantasy world. Of all the bassist I have seen with them since Woody, he fit the best and challenged both Warren and Matt the best much like Woody did. I find since the addition of keyboards, Matt's playing is mellower and much more straight forward. Due to the nature of the songs but I would love an album where Matt played more like the first two albums.

Remember that both Govt Mule and the WHB are his babies so love them both and buy the album.

Warren will not can the Mule. He's just exploring some repressed R&B, and one day, he will wake up, call Matt, they will settle on the final players in the band, and come back with a VENGENCE!!!! He will take the Mule to the next, next level. He made it, it's his, and he won't forsake or forget it.

Where did the idea come from that the lineup is going to change? Mule is taking a single year off. I believe Jorgen and Danny will be back in 2012. I hope Warren gets tons of publicity and the album is highly successful but Mule is not going away. Mule is Warren's true musical love.

That was just a poor choice of grammatical structure on my part. There is nothing noted that there will be a change of personnel. My bad. Strike that part of the post. Peace John

I believe it with perfect faith. In the interim I am just glad I will get to see the Mule in their only performance this year at Mt. Jam.

Since it will be their only show for at least six months (we are all hoping for a December Beacon run) I am predicting one for the ages. I certainly will post as will others.

They may have the same lineup but that would depend on the time frame. If Warren's album was to take off to a higher level of success which is what many in the business predict then he would keep working and doing shows.

Are the other members on a retainer during the time off? If the answer is yes then the investment is made if not then no guarentee was given. Not my business to say but given that they are seeking other projects?

quote:
Check out the lineup for 9 Chambers: Vocalist and guitarist Greg Hampton (Alice Cooper, The New Czars, Lita Ford), guitarist Ed Mundell (ex-Monster Magnet), Jorgen Carlsson on bass (Gov’t Mule) and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heavn & Hell, DIO) on drums. Whoa. Greg Hampton was not kidding around when he told me he was putting together a new band that would psyche out the Hard Rock community! It doesn’t get any more legit than this lineup… Metal be thy name.

If that project works then no guarentee of his return. No harm and no foul as everyone has to earn a living. It doesn't mean that he won't be back either. But it is a full time gig for the other members. The music business is an ever changing beast and you need to stay fresh which is why this is a perfect time for Warren. Besides in all honesty, it is not like he was a long time member and if the Mule has proved anything it is that they can survive with different bassists.

The Mule will play shows and record again. Just give the man some time and support. All it will do is maybe bring Govt mule a few fans. Who knows maybe they will get more than 5 women at a show. No seriously.

The WHB is much more appealing to the masses from a vocal aspect and therefore the ladies will get on board more. My wife loves all the backing vocals. Her favorite Warren album is Tales Of Ordinary Madness and she finds this one has that sound plus even more backing vocals. She humors me and will listen to hours of ABB or Mule but Tales Of Ordinary Madness would be her pick so I am glad that she will have another to pick from.

I'm sure they do but some seem to want his WHB party to end even before it has begun much the same as the TTB. Give it a chance. The rest is beyond control anyway.

Warren Haynes is the luckiest musician alive. He has enough support to do what he wants to do which is play and make music. He can litterally jump generes at will ... not only on album but often during the same song. So ... more power to him. Just my opinion ... but personally I'd wish he'd take a break. Not just Gov't Mule. Decide what he wanted to do which hopefully would be to make a killer ROCK record either with the ABB, Mule and or WHB. Then take some time and write then cull and write again maybe with the help of a good producer. And hopefully release a CD chocked full of great tunes instead of one or two and some so so stuff. The anticipation from the fans and media it'd seem would catapult his career up another notch. Just my 02. Of course he can continue on the way he has too as long as he's happy.

I am seeing them next week and will see Warren each and every time I have the opportunity to do so. If he said Mule was over I would still support whatever he did. It's just that there is no reason to think that way.
