Javier left the band on his own accord

What's Derek supposed to do? Send the guy a check every month because he was a former band member??

Your bitterness has made you delusional.

he has no responsibility to ex band members.

I'll check out that Javier clip. I prefer Mike but he had a great voice. Very Stevie Wonder-y.

I also have no idea what Derek is supposed to do to "take care" of Javier. When Javier joined the band, I think everyone understood he wanted a solo career, and when he was offered a solo record deal in 2002, he left to pursue that. He was with them for about two years. I'm not sure how Derek was supposed to keep paying Javier for another nine years while he fulfilled his own record contract. He's put out a couple of albums over the years and this show will probably do some good things for him.

Javier's the man. No doubt he wins this competition. I sort of hope he doesn't, might be best to come in second rather than get locked into one of those awful deals that reality show winners end up with. It's pretty funny that Javier is on a competition with amateurs and semi-pros though, after all he's been an established solo artist for some time now and had a record deal with Columbia not too far back.

As for the aforementioned delusional bitterness... Javier actually sang backing vox with Derek & Susan at Wanee last year, as some may recall. The guy is an absolute beast of a singer but as others have mentioned, he has his solo career to tend to, and IIRC he was never a big fan of the touring life, either. In any case, he's a great guy and an incredible singer and it's the first and only time I've ever actually had a rooting interest in a reality show. Go Javier!

I would not worry about what other people say. People get real fired up on here if you say anything being close to neagaitve ,contrary, or an unpopular opinion about the ABB or anyone related to that group.

It's just an opinion folks, no sense in getting your under shorts in a bind.

Think it was about two years... Here's one of his shows on Archive:

He does have a great voice. I was never a big "Time After Time" fan and he sang too many notes for my taste, but I hope he does well. The show itself looks pretty ridiculous with those chairs and the sound effects.

I always wondered the same thing . The one time I saw him with DTB was at Atlanta's Roxy in '99 ( I think ) . He stood by me in the crowd until the show was 2 or 3 songs from being over , then Yonrico Scott called him up on stage to sing on some numbers .

I can't believe people do nto remember him, he has always had a great voice. He was the singer the first 3 or 4 times I saw DTB. He was a completely different styled singer than Mike. I like both of them equally.

I don't think I ever caught dTb with this guy. I caught them in 99 or 2000 and I remember their keyboard player of the time singing. Must have been Bill McKay.

I think he came into the DTB around 2000 after they started working Kofi into the band and Bill Mckay was gone. Anyone remember that guy ? Kind of a Greg style singer and could play the B-3. Kofi was a better fit all around though.

Javier was great with dTb. Actually, my favorite vocalist with the band. I think I remember him singing Stevie Wonder's "Too High" with the band and he nailed it. Didn't he also sing on a track or two on Joyful Noise??

Javier was a full-time member of the dTb for almost 2 years from Spring 2000- Spring 2002. When they finished Joyful Noise (or almost complete), he got his own record deal with Capitol records and left the band. They re-recorded the vocals with guests and added a few tracks when that happened and shelved a couple tunes. His vocals are on the track Joyful Noise. I have always wanted to hear the original version of that album which included the original For My Brother, Big Head Salsa and Ka-Ma-Lay.

The show at the Roxy in Atlanta with Javier was 10/14/2000. Per the dTbase, Looks like Javier sang lead on at least 6 tunes starting with the second tune Preachin Blues. Yield Not to Temptation was a tour-de-force with Javier & Derek doing call & response on vocals & guitar. They could do similar tones.

Javier also added some great latin flavor to the band during his time. The original Ka-Ma-Lay was a masterpiece with him singing Spanish verses.

Naima
Preachin’ Blues
Young Fun
For My Brother
Out Of Madness
Use Me
I Believe
Ric-Ko
Egg-15
Ain't That Loving You
Rasta Man Chant
Yield Not
My Favorite Things

There is some great soundboards of the Javier/Derek/Todd/Yonrico/Kofi & sometimes Count on the Live Music Archive. I love Mattison with the dTb but I also loved them with Javier too. It was Javier joining the band when they turned the corner for me (and when others became disapointed they were more vocal oriented).

Oh yeah - the original Like Anyone Else with Javier singing falsetto was amazing too (stream it 11/28/01 at LiveMusic Archive for a great version). They did strong versions of Don't Change Horses, Everything is Everything (I Hear Voices) and the previously mentioned Stevie Wonder tunes, too. He normally played congas when we wasn't singing. Kofi was on a strong songwriting run at that time and Javier was a good vehicle for him.

I saw Javier with the DTB back in 2001 at the Webster Theater in
Hartford, CT (it was a double billing with Eric Johnson). He sang
beautifully, and after the show, he hung out and talked with
the fans outside Derek's tour bus. A real nice guy.

Yep, I agree -- Big fan of Javier with the dTb. He also did some interesting vocals along with the melody of Maki Madni ... and sang some words; In what language, I do not know.

I seem to recall him singing Rastaman Chant as well.

Oh! just remembered the 4/20/01 Jav is allegedly dosed show... haha. (pretty sure that's the date)

............

taste this: http://www.archive.org/details/dtb2001-04-29flac16 Don't Change Horses

What a band.

I'm a fan as well and was so happy to see him win a spot on The Voice (a cool new show!). He's super talented.

There were a couple of shows where they did to Maki Madni with vocals (the lyrics are in Urdu). I'm pretty sure it didn't happen many times. There's a show from 12/31/2000 where they played Amazing Grace > Rastaman Chant > Maki Madni > Rastaman Chant. Amazing Grace is instrumental but Javier sang on Rastaman and Maki Madni.
