ZZ Top to Tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd

ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd will co-headline The Rebels & Bandoleros Tour this May. Though the two southern rock icons have a long, intertwined history, the two bands have not toured together in several years. Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for ZZ Top on 1974’s The Outlaw Tour before rising to fame on its own.

Rebels & Bandoleros tour dates

May 12 Wichita, KS—Intrust Bank Arena
May 13 Belton, TX—Bell County Expo Center
May 14 Oklahoma City, OK—Zoo Amphitheatre
May 19 Bangor, ME—Bangor Waterfront Pavilion
May 20 Big Flats, NY—Tags Summer Stage
May 21 Albany, NY—Times Union Center
May 22 Youngstown, OH—Covelli Centre
May 26 Peoria, IL—Peoria Civic Center Theatre
May 27 Lampe, MO—Black Oak Mountain Amphitheatre
May 28 Bossier City, LA—Centurytel Arena
May 29 Orange Beach, AL—Amphitheater at the Wharf

That would be cool to see if it was still 1974!

Saw Top and Skynyrd together at Macon Colesium in 2000. Great time! Won the tickets from a local radio station. Took a good buddy with me and drove down in my Z28 convertible, top down, stereo blasting and a doob on the way there and back.

True. Most new bands do have a limited song selection.

well you're talking as if the ABB played 23 different original tunes last week. i'm sure skynyrd or any other band could rack up statistics throwing in lots of covers

Even if you don't include covers, I'm sure they played about 40 different originals this run.

For you to compare what the "skynyrd" of today does, to what the abb of today does, proves you know nothing.

Can't go see them, did it once and left kinda disappointed. Have seen some footage of the early years with Ronnie, Leon, Billy, Steve & Cassie, Allen, Artimus... Different band now. I get it that Gary wants to keep touring and making $ but these boys just cant put the hammer down like the mid 70's version. Ronnie's stage presence was unequalled! little Bro can try but it just aint there. Been asked many times if there were one act i could see live... tough call between 1971 Brothers or 75 Skynyrd.. Guess i couldn't go wrong with either. guess i was born 20 years too late, was 2 when plane went down.

They also can't write a song these days to save their lives, either....I mean, God & Guns? Please. Sad.....

They are also the KINGS of regurgitated compilations....no other band even comes close.

I caught them in their prime @ Winterland in S.F. in 1975....A very large blurr, but I do recall Billy Powell being absent for that show. As the band was called out for their second encore, one of the band members stepped to the mic and said they couldn't go on "Because they had played everything they knew without Billy"... I also saw them a second time in that era when they may have opened for Marshall Tucker, but can't be sure of the date..... The original band was awesome....No doubt, they could light it up.

That being said. I feel the unfortunate thing for some here as far as this band goes is the point raised above about the $. Meaning, it seems to me that they are playing on the public's ignorance...My wager is that John Q. Public has absolutely NO IDEA that there's only ONE original member in this band (who just happens to be the rhythm guitarist).... I figure if an Allman brothers show in 2009 can have people in the crowd asking "Which one is Dickey"?... Then surely it is possible that there are people in the Skynyrd crowd who are not aware that the cover band down the street playing for a $3 door charge is probably more competent and sounds substantially better as well...

Spare me. Old Skynyrd fan can't take the new lineup; ain't what they used to be...nowhere near and ZZ Top makes me yawn. Forgive offense to fans, but doesn't every song sound the same?

Skynyrd 1976 was on fire. One More from the Road may be my favorite and most played record of all time. They were also very hot in the first couple years after Ed King joined the band around the time of their first two records. If my time machine would work, I'd go to a 3-guitar lineup show from late 1974 and another one from the Fox 1976. Holy smokes were they on fire.

They also returned strong in 1987 with Leon, Gary, Billy, Ed, and Artimus. One of my favorite concert memories of my life was seeing them back to back nights at the Omni that Fall.
