There have been rumors circulating that Jimmy Herring was leaving the Dead for a while, but I don't think it's true. I think he's the perfect choice for them, and don't know why he would leave.

Jonesy, I can almost GUARANTEE this is not true. Anyone can start a rumor on the internet, its not hard at all. Some people simply get off on starting controversy...I hope this doesn't get too much attention cause it really doesn't deserve it unless it came straight from Warren...which it did not.

I hope the rumour is true about Joan Osbourne being gone.
What the **** was she doing in there anyway?
I liked it better when the "Donna" spot was filled by Susan Tedeschi in The Other Ones.

EddieP, I agree, and hope it is just internet fodder.

After all...we have a band here to look after!

Too many stupid rumours of this kind circulating right now - does anyone REALLY believe Warren could join another band full-time???

Bear in mind also, that upcoming gig schedules just don't square with this - on NYE for example, The Dead are in Oakland & Mule play in NYC.

This doesn't wash...

I was thinking the same thing Paul. I dont think even Warren could pull that off. Two shows on opposite coasts at the same time

Whats with the Joan bashing???? I think she adds alot to the band...As far a Barrocco(sp) I dont think that would matter as much. They still have Chimenti, and Bobby and JOAN can handle most of the vocals.. And a little Phil too.

WharfRat, there are apparently many Deadheads who cannot stand Joan singing in the band.

I for one don't understand that, everything I have heard sounds good to me. Frankly she is the only one who can sing in tune in the band, besides Barraco. Weir's singing is shot to hell, and Phil never could really sing.

Joan bashing eludes me....she did a Stella Blue at Jones Beach you could have heard a pin drop on the sand ... it was exquisite...I got the impression from Mickey that this line up is pretty well fixed for the time being

Joan is cool in my book. The girl has got some serious pipes and a really nice stage presence. The Dead camp seems to be somewhat split on the Joan thing...I'd say 70% of the heads really like her and 30% don't. You can never please everybody...look at what we go through here with certain topics...Joan did a hell of a job. She had to learn 100+ songs in a short period of time and did it as professionally as possible...And remember the band picked her, she didn't campaign for the gig...The guys needed help on vocals and go the best possible voice for the job. She certainly has a better voice than Donna had, Joan has a lot more range and is awesome on the bluesy stuff.

She also did a stunning Strawberry Fields Forever on the 8/9 show I believe... John would be proud..

Yes Sandman, Joan really baits everyone. Kind of funny for the Dead, but I remember some of the comments directed at Donna Godchaux from the audience when she sang with them.

Yeah this reminds me of some really funny stuff I saw on the Philzone a while back...

Some of the folks that didn't like her started a thread that said..."Please can Joan" meaning fire her.

Then some people that obviously thought Joan is cutie said. "Please Joan's "can".

and then lastly..."Joan's "can" Pleases"...pretty funny chit.

Yeah Joanie does have some sexy hippie-girl moves up there for sure.

I thought bringing on on Joan was an excellent solution for what to do with some of Jerry's signature songs. Would we rather have someone up there trying to imitate Jerry? Since '72 or so on, the Grateful Dead chose, on and off, to have a female vocalist. Many fans seemed suddenly shocked by the notion. I saw Joan solo early on in her career, and she set the crowd on fire. I for one hope they keep her around.

Anybody notice this post over there?

"I dislike Warren for the most part. If hes in the band...my Dead days are, well dead. I'm just barley hangin' on with Herring. If I wanted to hear southern rock all night...I'd go see ABB"
-------------

Not that it matters what they think.

I'm far from being a BIG fan of any incarnation of the GD, so I prolly shouldn't say much....but I like the sound they have now.

I agree that Joan fits in perfectly. As we all know, the Dead is not the Grateful Dead but rather their heirs. Thus it is fitting that they restructure it a bit.

I did not know much about her, but was sold the minute she finished a stellar Casey Jones at MPP. Her treatments of other classics such as Sugaree and China Doll verified this.

I am curious as to whether she is staying with them for the forseeable future.

This rumor has cropped up several times in the past few years. Frankly, I feel it's wishful thinking on the part of Dead fans who miss Warren from his days in Phil and Friends. Who could blame them?

I think that when Warren rejoined the band three years ago, he was making a calculated decision to do the ABB instead of Phil/Other Ones/The Dead. Warren isn't dumb. Something was going to have to go in order for him to rejoin the Allman Brothers, and it wasn't going to be the Mule, so you do the math. He loves to jam and still does the occasional gig with Phil, but it seems pretty obvious to me that Warren is back to stay. AMEN!

Rob, three years ago, there was no choice to join the Dead, or the Other ones for that matter. They were not playing and at that time there were no plans for them to do so.

While I don't necessarily have reason to believe this rumor since it is obviously unsubstantiated, there are a couple of pieces in the puzzle that bug me.

1. Warren is playing with Phil, obviously and has been for awhile. He has total familiarity with both Herring and all of the material.

2. For the most part, Dead fans really like Warren.

3. I would venture to say that the potential payday to Warren in the Dead is much bigger than that with the ABB.

4. Gregg did not tour this winter. It probably means nothing, but it has raised speculation about the longevity of our favorite band, at this point.

5. The Dead are clearly not afraid to make changes and/or be aggressive. Wasn't it Phil who tried to lure Jimmy Herring out of the ABB initially?

Even if Warren needed the money, Jonesy, where would he find the time? I think Warren's tenure with Phil is nearing an end, and I don't think he's going to be a supporting player in someone else's band again.
