Not sure if all were playing Duane's, but I know Derek did.

Devon was in awe! I am so glad he got to play it too. Derek and Warren have been going back and forth with it throughout each night! So very cool! Duane's daughter Galadrielle has been sitting to the side of Gregg each night and I am sure she is very proud to see it being played too!

Galadrielle is there, thats cool,I was wondering what her relationship is with the band

So all those people on the side of the stage are friends and family,I have been wondering what there deal was,I have them up there at a few shows and was curious, I saw a show at Oakdale some years back and they had some bleacher seats up there, now I wouldn't mind sitting up there for a little while but its not really a good seat

Someone captured a clip of Devon playing it on One Way Out Mon night!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIjeTy7sa94

It's all family and friends to the right and left of the stage. Susan was playing a nasty air guitar Sat night! In a good way! LOL!

Galadrielle is the owner of Goldie!

I thought that this guitar was recently for sale. I am not sure that Galadrielle owns it. None the less, I am sure it is especially poignant for her to seeit and hear itbeing played by the family band!

Check out this website:
http://www.duaneallmansgoldtop.com/history.htm

I also read somewhere that the guitar was onsale a couple years ago and the asking price was $1mill. They said that the price wasn't unprecended since Clapton's Blackie had sold for some $900k. I don't know how it concluded, but I assume the previous owner(s) did not sell the guitar and now they are putting the guitar in people's hand to have it enjoyed and honored rather than just sitting in a display case somewhere. That is my take on the situation, although I really am not too familiar with the subject.

The one that Warren was playing last night had a pick guard. Maybe from all of the playing he has done on Duane's '57 Warren got the itch to bust out his own.

Farmer must have his hands full backstage having to switch up the Gold Top's setup for Derek and then Warren in the same show. Pretty sure Warren uses 10's for strings, while I'm pretty sure Derek uses 11's. Then there's having to adjust the pickup for the string tension due to Derek playing in open E...

It was stated by someone in the family that she owns it so I'd thought that to be the case.

Farmer isn't the only one bustin a$$! Bobby T has his hands full and had his hands on it too!

I ran into Farmer at the little burger place across from the Beacon after the show last night. What a nice dude.
I was a little foggy can we say, but I think he said something about the other Gold Top being Dickey's from years past.

He had other details, sorry don't remember

The story I have heard pretty consistently is that Duane's Gold Top is one that Dickey used to own, and traded. Any further details from me would be pieced together info. But I also think it is related to how Duane came across his SG, which I think belonged to Dickey. It makes me wonder, through looking at pictures of the original line up, if they pretty much switched them up at will.

Interesting observation on the set up changes between Derek and Warren playing the same guitar back to back.

Yep, also if I remember correctly, on Monday's show, Warren was playing the Gold Top for the first half of Les Brers, then after JaBuMa Warren returned to the stage playing one of his standard LP's. Then Devon was playing it for the encore...wonder if it needed a change up between Warren and Devon?

if that's the ones that duane daughter owns then thats the one from the rock and roll hall of fame. The ones in there are hers. The one for sale is a private owner and the authenticity is good but not perfect. The ones in the hall of fame are spot on.

While I mostly agree with you I would like to know where a lot of this knowledge comes from. I have read pretty extensively about Duane's gear and I know that Twiggs kept the Iced Tea Burst Les Paul until Galadrielle could get it (so the story goes). But there are, maybe, three different Les Paul Gold Tops connected to Duane,a s far as I can make out, in a sketchy way. There is the one that has been posted for sale recently. There is the one that Dickey has played for years, which by his account, he got from Duane on trade for his SG. Then there is this one, which may or may not be yet another. At Wanee 2007 Derek played Duane's Gold Top at the midnight show on the last night. It had a terrible hum. There was word at that show that the owner was a North Florida local who thought it would be great to have Derek play it. Can someone offer any further clarification?

Just checked into the Milburn and saw Farmer so we chatted a bit about this subject. There are 3 57's being used. 1 without pick guard, 2 with. The one without was Duane's but this is not the one that Galadrielle owns. He started going on and on and lost me a bit but said it doesn't stay with them after the shows each night due to it's value. I asked him about last night because the opening song while Derek was on it made it sound different but in a nasty good way and he said it's all the same each night expcept for which amp is being used. Sorry I didn't retain the owners name! I'll ask him again and write it down if I run into him!

Great info Susea. Is the owner of this guitar Mike Boulware? If so here's the story on it:

http://www.duaneallmansgoldtop.com/history.htm

This guitar is currently for sale. Asking price: $1.1 million

Of the three shows I've seen Derek has opened each with a Gold Top, usually 2 or three songs before he switches out to the red guitar. The Gold Top does come back out now and then as the show progresses. FYI, he has a new red one he's breaking in as well. He plays the old red one (with all the autographs on it) most of the time but I have seen an identical new one for a few songs. As for the lineage of the Gold Top he is playing, no idea.

I think Warren brings his own Gold Top out more and more frequently. Warren and Hidalgo switched guitars for a little bit and Hidalgo played WH's Gold Top. I don't know it for a fact but I think there are at least two Gold Tops floating around backstage (Warren's own, and the one Derek opens the show with). But I could be wrong.

PS...whoever stole my coat last night, shame on you.

That's the same one Warren and Derek have been playing. It's been at the Big House for awhile. I am hearing it's been brought back to the Big House in Macon. As far as ownership of it, I am not sure if Galadrielle owns the Gold Top or not? If she does, she has only recently acquired it. As far as I know a guy named Mike Boulware owns the Gold Top, and has wanted it to be seen, played etc by the current lineup. Now if he has given/sold/donated etc the Gold Top to Galadrielle? I have no idea. I do know that Galadrielle owns the infamous 1959 Tobacco Sunburst Les Paul, which is @ The RRHOF these days. Personally, I think that should be at the Big House too, that's just my opinion, because I feel that it will be far more appreciated by us, than the folks at RRHOF. As far as the 58/59 Sunburst Les Paul, which is the Les Paul that Duane traded this Gold Top, (he swapped the Pick ups from the 1957 Gold Top and the 1958/59 Sunburst + the deal was made with some cash as well as I am lead to believe) I am not sure, but I think Galadrielle has that one too. I could be mistaken about that...... I will have to ask EJ @ the Big House.

PS. Dickey's Gold Top's are seperate guitars entirely. I seem to recall him refinishing the infamous "Goldie" 1957 Gibson Les Paul and it's red now......
