There was a thread on this recently here on the board but the bottom line is that in NYC you will get arrested if you smoke in public. No if, and, or but. Anyone visiting the city must know this. If you have to smoke do it in private or at the Beacon (I was there last night in the orchestra and saw no one hassled). But you will get busted if they see you outside.

You would think the NYPD would have better things to do than bust people for weed smoking

On friday night the guy next to me lit up a joint and smoked it with his girlfriend....about an hour later a security guy walked into our asile out of the blue and asked the guy next to me to give him his ticket...he did as asked and the security guy tore a part of it off and told him he had seen him light up and if he did so again he would be thrown out immediately!...so everyone should know things are different..also when I went into the bathroom downstairs before the show there were security guy in the stalls checking to see if anyone was smoking in there.....

There are plenty of places outside to smoke in the city but is it smart to do so outside of the theater where the ABB plays? Probably not......

There have been many warnings over the years about smoking outside of the Beacon.

I noticed security type cameras on both sides of the stage, high up near the PA speakers. They obviously weren't for moogis. I wonder if they're watching the crowd. I would think it would be more fore security at higher profile events, than for people lighting up.

I tried to warn you guys. Every year it is the same story. Sorry for your negative experience. You can thank Mayor Bloomberg as you write your checks. And him and Police Commissioner for being just plain mean spirited.

There has been a BIG thing lately in NYC that people are not allowed to smoke, even cigarettes outside. Not in front of businesses, not in Central Park. People can be ticketed for smoking cigarettes so this is probably part of that. It's also probably easy tickets, like the speeding at the end of the month to make quotas. Just go where you know people will be doing it, and you can make your quota. A lot of people from out of town at the Beacon do not know about the city anti-smoking laws.

As of May 23, 2011 you will not be able to smoke anything in NYC parks, beaches, or Pedestrian Plazas. (Mike Bloomberg does not like cigarettes or cars in Manhattan) I live near the Beacon and would recommend that if you have to smoke before the show do not do it near the theater, cross to the other side of Broadway and walk west on some of the side streets there. It is all residential west of Broadway, you might get some dirty looks but it is much safer than smoking right near the theater. Riverside Park is 2 blocks west of the Beacon with an entrance at 74th Street, you can walk uptown, around the back of the basketball courts, past the playground (no kids there in the evening) and up the steps and out of the park at 77th street. Don't let Mayor Bloomberg catch you there after May 23rd!

They work hard to keep our city safe, and it is pretty safe right now, imo at least. 'Specially with all the budget issues, you can't really blame the police for doing their jobs...

Last year a friend of mine got hauled in. 11 people in the van, 9 from the Allman Brothers show. None of them had more than like a joint of weed and all were processed and let go that night. This effort tied up an entire precinct house for the whole night and as far as we know all 9 from the ABB either had the charges dismissed or will have the charges dismissed if they don't get in trouble for a year.

This sort of thing is a colossal waste of time and money. Surely this crew of narcotics cops could have been working on a more productive operation.

Myself and two friends got popped about 3 or 4 years ago. We were around the corner near Amsterdam Ave. After grilling us for about a 1/2 hr they let us go with $100.00 tickets only. My one friend had the same name as someone on the wanted list so they questioned me about him and his family then let us go. A few days later I go back for another show, and low and behold standing on the corner near the Beacon was one of the cops who busted us. He was undercover (trying to look like a war vet or something). So, I went up to him and loudly said, "Ex-cuuuuuse me officer!" "Those tickets you gave us the other night for the weed, can we just mail that in or do we have to appear" He just smiled and said "Just mail it in". The corner was now practically empty as people scattered like roaches. I told him, "Ya know, with all due respect, with all the terrorist threats I thought they could spend their time more wisely than busting 3 50+ yr olds for one joint." He said "My boss was there, I didn't agree either but had to" (his boss was a REAL hard guy btw). About a week later we all get a letter in the mail saying the tickets were recinded. I know, not the smartest thing to say to a cop, it was in the moment. Pretty funny to me in hindsight now. He even seemed to get a kick out of it. I guess things have changed in a few years. Just beer & Patron for me these days. Peace.

In the first 3 shows, there was quite a bit being smoked in the theatre w/o problems as far as I could see. The smoking area outside on Sat also had more than I've seen before. Be quick and there ought not be any issues.

I am one of a number of folks who were arrested, cuffed, thrown in a van and a cell for a puff outside of the theatre on Friday night. It was a veritable sting operation targeting folks going to the show as they waitied until they had 10 of us in the van before taking us uptown. In retrospect it was stupid and I have only myself to blame but considering I flew here with my two young adult kids and we missed Friday nights show ($450 in tix for the 3 of us) and may have to fly us alll back here to appear, it cost us dearly and sucked most majorly. Talk about Manic Depression. Fortunately we got to see last night and it smoked. So be safe out there.

I ran into a friend of yours on the Raritan Valley Line on the way home who told me the story. Glad you didn't have to spend the night in jail and that you got to see the next night. Your friend told me that they told him to expect the case to get thrown out, that the major hassle was that evening and having to go back. He also told me that the cops told him the did it due to complaints by folks living in the area that you were smoking.

Sucks that anyone got or gets busted smoking outside the venue - I had a feeling local neighbors bother the cops to bust folks - I doubt these neighbors like losing all their parking spaces either - every year my buddy and I drive in and ALWAYS find a free spot on the side streets. We always park, have a beer or two and smoke a little then head to a bar for food then into the show. I went opening night and sitting in lower balcony, did not smell much weed that night. I also noticed the security is dressed in all black in sneak up on you. I also noticed the 4 cams on either side of the stage pointing at the audience. And in the balc, i saw security standing on either side of the section and looking around for any lighters going off then headed right over towards that person. I lit up a one hit maybe twice - and got away with one in the bathroom upstairs, though there was a guy in there (what a s*^%ty job that is) but he didn't seem to be looking for smoking.

I understand what you are all saying. I got busted a few years ago, but last time I looked they are NYC Cops and smoking pot is still illegal so do the math.

Ya take a chance when you smoke pot in the city
