He comes up now and then on my Pandora station, and I like what I hear, but they only play a couple of his songs.

Anyone with a more extensive knowledge?

Any recommended albums?

I'm very fond of the album he did with his wife.

You can listen to samples and buy the mp3s here:

Pop is not bad. I have CD recorded in France and it was good. He does not seem to stand out from the guitar blues cast. I always go with a live recording when I try someone new because you get the feel for how the guy is when performs in front of a crowd. If he is good in front of a crowd he should be good in the studio.

Tom Dowd produced Chubby's "Booty and the Beast" disc.

I remember Mannys ! As well as Chicago Blues and Lonestar Road House. There was also a place called Cross Roads I remember seeing some good bands back. I really think NYC lost a lot of great small venues and if they've been replaced their too sterile. Maybe I'm just older an out of the loop.

A friend of a friend was playing drums for Chubby in the mid/late 90's. Always a good time. He's worth checking out. Very much into the SRV/Hendrix style. He had some good originals and made a bit of a mainstream push with Booty and Beast and the single Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer. I saw him so much that I got a little tired of him but he was always fun. I remember a small place in Scranton, PA where he put his guitar down and threw a trouble maker out of the joint !

One of my favorite times was visiting my brother in Hawaii. Chubby happened to be playing a small bar on Oahu. The drummer I knew had no idea I was over there. I stood next to the drums and in the middle of the song he saw he me and started laughing and almost dropped his sticks. Chubby was pissed ! All business. Kind of like James Brown. You work for me. We're not in a band together. This my gig. etc...

Big ball breaker but again, worth checking out.

I love Popa Chubby live, but the CDs leave me a little flat. I feel like that about several mid sized (popularity-wise) artists. Decent recorded material but live is where the magic happens.

* (having said that I still want new material in a studio format from the ABB, but they are super-sized imo)

Wow, was just going to post about seeing him at manny's car wash in NYC My nephew would perform there on open mike nights and we would go in support of him. I even caught derek Trucks there in '99..I think, or there abouts.
Caught Poppa Chubby there once and thought he put on a nice show...didn't blow me away, but thought they were pretty good.
Remember the Atomic Wings place right off the corner south of manny's?
Those were some hot wings!

They used to play Poppa Chubby quite a bit on Sirius Blues 74. Now that it has merged with XM radio, I don't think they play as big a variety of artists. It's still my favorite radio channel, but I liked it better when it was just Sirius.

You know, I feel the same way. I liked Sirius' old blues channel better too.

I just saw Popa Chubby live at 2nd Story blues in Fountain Hill, PA (Bethlehem). It was a great show. I wrote a review of it for American Blues News but it hasn't been posted yet. When I talked to him before the show, he said the club's owner heard his "The Fight Is On" CD and canceled the gig! He thought it was too rock for the usual crowd. Popa promised to stick with more traditional blues fare and the gig remained intact. It was a sold out show so I don't think they needed to worry. He plays the Hell out of the guitar and his vocals are gritty and gruff; they fit the music perfectly. I would recommend any of his live CDs or DVDs. He really shines in a concert setting.

I learned a long time ago that you and I had similar tastes in music, Jim.

He opened for Johnny Winter at the Ridgefield Playhouse a few years ago and we talked after the show. He puts on a good live show but I am not familiar with any of his releases.
He produced Arthur Neilsons cds-Arthur is an excellent local guitarist from Brooklyn and he is a friend.

If you don't have any Popa cd's then I would start with "Big Man Big Guitar Live!"
Excellent!!! He can tear it up with the best of them.
