Butch Trucks said the band really enjoyed surprising fans with Layla and Don't Think Twice in 2003 and he wondered what other covers they might consider for 2004. What do you think they should play?

I think with Derek and Warren in the band you gotta go with anything from the classic Layla album. How about "Key To The Highway", "Bell Bottom Blues" or one of my favourites "Anyday", all of these would give Derek and Warren a chance to shine.

the brothers doing stevie wonder would be great. could show the vocals and slide real well.
i would love to hear "i was made to love her". derek could put some brilliant slide over anything by stevie wonder. the arrangement michael mcdonald does of "i believe when i fall in love..." is great, especially the jam at the end. i could hear warren singing the verses and gregg singing the jam at the end w/ derek soloing over it.
i would also second the "bell bottom blues" idea. that would be phenomenal.
the return of "just ain't easy" would also be really cool.
also a big thanks to mr. butch trucks for asking for input.

i think It would be cool to see them do les brers in Am again, they dont do that anymore...

also to go along with the dont think twice thing, maybe they should try stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again. How cool would that be?

It would be interesting to hear "Born under a bad sign" and
more of "Stormy Monday" too.

The first two that come to mind are Afro Blue or My Favorite Things, but that's too easy. After that:

Pegasus
From the Madness of the West

and, my longshot, from way out in left field...

Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman. This would be so much damn fun! They certainly could do justice the song that launched Gene Krupa, and with Derek & Warren on slide replacing the horns, Yowza!!

From the songbook: "Need Your Love So Bad"; "True Gravity" (co-written by WH)

From Warren/Derek: "Naima;" a full-on "Afro-Blue" (both DT and WH do this one, and Duane's affinity for Coltrane makes it a logical fit); "Georgia On My Mind" (Ray Charles; Gregg sings it on Soul Serenade)

Anything-goes covers: "Europa" (Santana); "Drown in My Own Tears" (Ray Charles; Gregg would nail this); a return of "Loan Me a Dime;" "Aint No Sunshine" (Bill Withers); and of course we have to raid the Willie Dixon songbook at least once, so how about Warren on "Walkin' the Blues"?

I would love to hear "Win Lose or Draw" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" (not just a teaser) Full version from Laid Back
Instrumental would be Pegasus.

I agree with CanPeach. "Key To The Highway" would be sick with Derek and Warren trading.

jaimoe00, you nailed it with WLorD! Can you imagine Gregg's voice as it sounds today, in a slow, angst-filled version of that!

My Favorite Things

(Sittin' On)The Dock of the Bay......with Warren on vocals!!!

Drown In My Own Tears.....with Gregg on vocals

Sugaree........with Warren and Susan!!! Warren does a great job on this song with Phil and Friends and Susan did a great job too with The Other Ones in the fall of '02. I'd love to hear this with both of them and Derek doing his slide work on this!!!

True Gravity

I was listening to DTB Soul Serenade today and thinking about Drown in my own Tears as a song for them to do next year

There's lots of room for jamming in an update of Fleetwood Mac's Rattlesnake Shake and it's not a song that I've heard any bands performing.

Much as I like "Pegasus" and "From the Madness of the West" (especially if we could hear a version without a synth!) I think we're kidding ourselves that the ABB would add a Betts composition to the rotation. Both are probably better suggestions for Great Southern.

My favorite Peter Green song is Albatross -- what a terrific twin-guitar tune! No other band does it -- let's see Derek and Warren shine on it!

Little Wing done Derek and the Dominoes style (dual lead vocals) would be so soulful.

I love 'Liz Reed' myself, especially the drum solo. However, if I had to choose there is nothing I wanna hear ABB play more than 'Layla'! Also 'High Falls' is a beautiful piece, I swear I heard them play that cut in either '99 or 2000 at the Beacon and it was awesome.

In the Layla mode of nods to missing friends, Soul Serenade might be cool. So would a full-on Afro Blue or My Favorite Things.
I like Lenherr's Sing Sing Sing idea... it's just a kickass song. It'd be even cooler if Gregg's horn section showed up, as they've been doing in recent years. That would add a lot.

What else... the ABB is always good to Willie Dixon, but the Robert Johnson tunes have been scarcer lately. I love Warren's takes on 32-20 Blues and If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day. Would those be surprises?

Hmm, something more surprising, or for Gregg to sing... Dimples would probably get a huge crowd reaction.
