Seeing that I like to start threads to compile information on Red Dog - his benefit and a place for us to send him our regards, I thought I'd start one up for information about the memorial planned in his honor on April 22 in Macon at the Cox Theater.

So, anyone with any information, here's your thread. I look forward to watching this memorial come together.

More money for the health industry and drug companies who cram even more chemicals down our throats.

THIS has nothing to do with Red Dog's memorial. Please, folks, leave this thread open for important incoming information.

Well, yeah, that's true. Way back in the 70's, we lost ABB baseman Lamar Williams to cancer that was generally accepted as caused by Agent Orange. You should check out what this wonderfully effective defoliant has done to the population of Viet Nam, both north and south. I think it is generally accepted that a tremendous percentage of the population suffers from permanent genetic damage meaning that Agent Orange will be affecting the people there for generations.
The US government just came out with statistics saying 16% of all homeless people here in the US are Vietnam vets and most of them are alcoholic and/or drug addicted and suffering from severe post traumatic stress syndrome. I recently had a friend admitted to the local VA hospital where he suffers from all three plus a whole lot of physical and mental problems directly attributed to his tours of duty in Viet Nam. No one expects Tommy to ever come home.
You can take this further to how the US government is compensating the people who worked "the pile" after 9/11. This is all great fodder for the Whipping Post here.

Back to the memorial. Who is planning to attend besides me?

Heard some chat about certain ABB members showing up to honor Red Dog.

Anybody know what Gregg is doing on April 22? I know he'll be a little tired from Wanee and all but it sure would be sweet, not to mention THE RIGHT THING TO DO, for him to honor the guy who paid all their bills with his VA check to get them on the road.

Just saying...

Anybody hearing anything about guest artists?

From 13wmaz on 2/23.

A big piece of the Allman Brothers' Macon legacy died this week.
He is Joseph "Red Dog" Campbell, a band roadie for more than three decades.
He died of cancer Monday at a Central Georgia hospice after a long illness, according to E.J. Devokaitis, curator of the Allmans' Big House Museum in Macon.
Campbell, 68, is a Florida native who first connected with the band in Florida in the 1960s, Devokaitis said.
"He was one of their first steadfast fans," he said. "He started following them around, basically until he got hired."
Campbell was a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart winner who shared his veterans' disability checks with the band during their struggling early years, he said.
Kirsten West of Macon says Campbell was one of the "original 10" -- six band members and four roadies -- who moved to Macon as the Allmans built their career with Phil Walden's Capricorn Records.
"He's just a part of that world and the history and the legacy,' says West. "He helped them when they had nothing."
"It was a time when they were truly a band of brothers, and he was part of the original brotherhood," said Devokaitis, also a former Allmans roadie who learned some of the tricks of the trade from Campbell.
Campbell built a home in Jones County, but lived in both Central Georgia and Florida in recent years.
No funeral is scheduled for Campbell, according to an Allman Brothers' fan site, but a memorial may be scheduled for Macon in April at the Cox Capitol Theater.

I haven't heard about any definitive plans for the memorial, other than the date. I'm coming, and have no expectations. I'm going to celebrate Red Dog with whoever else shows up.

I never had the pleasure to meet "Red Dog" aka Mr. Campbell..but from the first time I saw his pic on the cover of LAFE he has always been one of the legends of the band to me. I can remember as a youngn' playing in bands and our assistants were affectionately and in tribute of this man called the red dog. I remember at my first ABB show in '74 watching the bands equipment being set up saying..."hey, there's Red Dog" etc. He will always be a special 'larger than life' person to me and while schedule may not permit, if it does Macon is only 6 hours from here and I'd have no problem making the trip. Joseph 'Red Dog" Campbell had a positive influence on many more people probably than he knew and will remain in my heart forever with Duane, BO, Lamar, and Allen.

I would imagine the band will have some kind of tribute/dedication to Red Dog during the beacon run.

That would be the proper thing to do. I wouldn't count on it though, not after the sudden cancellation of a fund raiser at The Big House and Butch's comments.

Jaimoe is the only original band member that has honored Red Dog by his words and his actions.

This would be a lovely show of brotherly love and kindness for Joseph.. he was humbled by his own fame.. he lived a life as all the ABB and roadies have done , almost to hard to put into words..it was moments in time that were as unique as the era of time that they were living in then and the music that the band made..

All the ABB and roadies, I suspect and hoped that they loved each other.. as in any family some things happen that change the dynamics of things.. death, marriage, children, families, commitments, egos and more importantly t i m e .. it keeps moving and waits for no one.. it has no agenda... just moves forward..

In having a Memorial for Joseph it can be soothing to those who cared deeply for him and a time for forgiveness and showing the love to each other and for him.. it will be a very special memory and service for all who attend..and for the ones who can not and will be there in spirit only , will also be rejoicing with everyone alive and who are now angels...

I second that!!! I'm just going to celebrate a man I feel very blessed to have known. Whoever shows up...it will be a beautiful night to celebrate a beautiful magical life with the people who loved and cherished him.

Since there's no word on the Memorial yet, I guess we got to write about something here. I was browsing through Red Dog's book and was surprised to see that it's been ten years since he published it. I also found a picture of the two of us with the book, him signing it and grinning - in Alabama somewhere - and a business card that read "Red Dog - A True Allman Brother Roadie 1969 - . Who knew they'd break his heart just two years later.
Anyway, I also had forgotten the poem at the end of the book:

A Speck of Light

I cry out, I cry out
Nobody hears my plea
Left to stand alone
where has The Brotherhood gone

I cry out, I cry out
Nobody hears my plea
Where are the spirits that lead the way
Where are the spirits of yesterday

Surrounded by the times of the past
In a room full of darkness
there's a speck of light
I must fight

...Red Dog

He IS that speck of light now and it shines brightly.

What happened?? We are going to try and come (but wife will be pretty pregnant by then). We enjoyed the benefit last August. I would guess similar guests (chuck and randall). Were Chuck and Dog pretty close?? Lots of stuff in the silent auction came from Chuck and Rose Lane. Musically in august Chuck was the highlght for us....that Dreams he did was great (and Randall B and Tommy T were great too). Any more info that comes up, we want to hear. Loved the DOg
