Ok, so I fractured my left ankle and also sustained torn ligaments this morning.

I will be in a hard cast for 4 - 6 weeks. I am not allowed to put any pressure on my foot.

This is seriously going to hamper my 2011 Beacon experience...

Since I only have one arm as it is and am having difficulties using the crutches I am considering using a wheelchair to get around the Beacon area...

Does ANYONE out there have any experience with wheelchairs, especially at concerts?

Also worried about getting in/out of the Iridium parties/events...

Should I just bag it now?

Any help is greatly appreciated kids...

If I was able to make the shows I'd carry you on my back.

Good luck sweetie.

I am so sorry to hear about your injury Jacquie.

The Beacon should be able to accommodate you in a chair. Either call their box office for TM customer service. They used to put wheelchairs at AA on the right and left sections, so maybe that will ease your pain a bit. I would suggest you make it clear that you are not able to get out of the chair (even to move to a regular seat). If they put you anywhere but up front, with everyone standing in the Orchestra you won't see anything, and I don't think the aisles will accommodate a chair, that's why they are placed up front.

I almost got into a fight with some a-hole trying to push in front of Mitzi's husband one year and the next night he had issues again. Get friendly with the usher around you in case you need assistance.

The Iridium may be a another issue. It's in the basement with a long narrow staircase. My guess is the place will be crowded to boot. Call them during the day (number on their website) and ask about accessible entrance. They are very nice folks and I am sure they will try to help.

PM or call if I can do anything. No baggin it, lady!!!

also when talking to the beacon be sure to ask them
about access to a bathroom for you, I think you have
to go a long way down steps in the lobby to get to one.
Im not sure if they have one on the lobby's 1st floor
but be sure to ask the beacon so you have all the bases covered.
All the best to you and have a quick recovery. ~peace~

YOU ALL ARE WONDERFUL! Thanks so much for your help! I will start making the calls tomorrow to line up my ducks...between driving in rather than taking the train and using a wheelchair I should make out ok with a little help from my wonderful friends. I'll figure out a way to get into the Iridium even if i have to crawl...

for those of you who offered piggy back rides...that's exactly how i got into my mom's house yesterday...my awesome brother ben piggybacked me in and out...he only smashed my elbow into the wall once doing it, too! lol! thank god i've lost those 36 pounds or else no one would be lifting me anywhere!

Keep the tips coming. My love and gratitude to you all...

Jacquie...the Beacon does have handicap services. An Ohio buddy of mine had some serious surgery 3 or 4 years back just before the Beacon run and his wife inquired. They were treated very nicely. Would think they would still have those services even with the new ownership. Take care kid'! Not gonna make it to NYC this year...but see you at Wanee!

Oh no, Jacquie! I'm sorry to hear this. I wish you a speedy recovery. Keep us informed on what you've found out and if we can do anything to help you. I know how determined you are and I don't believe for a minute this will hinder your getting your groove on.

Jacquie, so sorry to hear about your injury! Prayers for a speedy recovery coming your way. Re: the Beacon ... GO! After all you've done for folks around here over the years I'm guessing you'll have a crew who will be ready, willing, and able to help you with whatever manuevering you need to do to get in and out of the Beacon and the Iridium and anywhere else that celebrations may be occurring. Be well and enjoy your Beacon trip, sister!

Jacquie,

#1, SO sorry to hear your are injured. MAJOR BUMMER, and right before Beacon.

#2, The wheelchair idea is great, but even then, having only one arm could present problems operating/navigating the wheelchair, unless you have someone to help push you around. What about renting a motorized chair while you are off of your injured ankle? Would insurance cover it, in light of your circumstance? You'll have plenty of help from the famABBly to get you around for Beacon, but what about going to work, etc.?

#3, Will The Beacon sell you, trade or upgrade your already purchased tickets to the better handicapped seating area reserved for wheelchairs, since you will be using one?

#4, Be careful in the crowds that someone doesn't run into your injured foot/ankle while you are in the chair. You know how people can be in a crowd, especially when they're imbibing.

Get better soon!

That last one is a biggie, Dave.

Rose broke her shoulder two years ago. We went to the Beacon and any time anyone even brushed her arm, she was in severe pain.

If you need guardians front and rear on the 12th.....

I've gone to the Beacon with wheelchair folks in the past and the theater is VERY accomodating. Hell, in most cases you get a much better view then I've ever had as there are several accessible areas up front in the orchestra near Gregg.

YOU can DO it! You know every one of us would be more than willing to help get you around once inside.

Jacquie,
I have 30+ years of experience of going to concerts with a wheelchair. My brother Vinny, had a brain disease (similar to Cerebral Palsy) which caused his body but not his mind to fail. He was wheelchair bound for the last 30 of his 51 years. One of the few pleasures he could enjoy was music. We went to many concerts - ABB included. (I'll tell you a funny story involving Vin and Dickey Betts at another time, if anyone is interested.)
I mean it with every fiber in my body when I say go to the concerts as planned. You will have no trouble; many people will help you if you need it. The experience will be more memorable because of it. I think you will enjoy yourself in a way that you have never even thought about.
NYC people are very helpful as are the overwhelming majority of ABB fans.
All the best.

You'll be fine!!!

The security as I'm sure you know is great (at least they were for Hot Tuna).

If I were going, I'd also offer to give you a hand if you needed it and come boogie by you, but, I won't be.

You'll still have a helluva time I'm sure :-)
