I was wondering....who would y'all consider to be a "musical genius"?

Below is my list (not in any particular order):

Jerry Garcia
Duane and Gregg Allman
Warren Haynes
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Elvis
Chuck Berry
Muddy Waters
Elton John
Bob Dylan
Jon Anderson and the members of Yes

May add more to this list as I ponder some more.....

Y'all go ahead and add too.

BD

man i see some almost laughable answers. just because someone can play an instrument well doesn't make them a genius. i saw duane and gregg listed. one of the best voices of blues rock and one of the greatest guitar players ever but what did they do that was genius? basically slightly rearrange blues tunes?

anyways here is my list:
frank zappa
prince
lennon
brian wilson
ray davies
peter gabriel
stevie wonder

"man i see some almost laughable answers."

you might not agree, but laughing at others opinions? ..anyway,I'll use your logic & disagree on Ray Davies & Peter Gabriel. Don't see that at all.

how can you say ray davies and peter gabriel weren't genius? ray its based mostly on his lyrics but peter gabriel is widely considered one of the greatest avant garde songwriters in pop music history.

when i see nirvana, iron maiden, duane and gregg, janis joplin, elvis, bruce springsteen and led zeppelin mentioned i wonder what people base their decision on. nirvana and zeppelin did nothing more than take someone elses great ideas and try to pass them off as their own.elvis as far as songwriting credits never tried to pull the wool over anyones eyes but what did he do other than dance that was new in any way to music? the others i mentioned are great artists but there was nothing revolutionary about anything they did. they styles of music already were out there and they slightly added their own twist to it. if anything dickey betts was the one in the band doing something different but even then i don't think it was genius.

Thanks for setting folks straight and discounting others opinions about something that is purely subjective and pretty much personal, anyway - music. An artist I included is in your list of 'unmentionables', others may have been included in my list if they hadn't been mentioned elsewhere, and I was going to take the bait and play and list my reasons for my decisions. Then I realized I was entering upon an 'exercise in futility' (there are none so blind as those who will not see...) and thought back to other similar threads and posts where you've been kind enough to point out the 'wrong thinking' of others (ie - 'not what I think therefore is incorrect') . You obviously have an interpretation of what was meant by 'who would you consider to be a musical genius' and what those words 'musical genius' mean and consider anyone whose laughable interpretation of what defines genius as different than your own correct interpretation to be - well, wrong. Speaking of laughable...

thats not true at all. maybe if some reasons were listed for why an artist was included i'd see some valid points but people seem to be naming influential artists or great musicians as opposed to someone who actually was doing something beyond the norm of whatever genre they were part of. it was great joplin took a mans world, grabbed it by the balls and showed that females can do it to just as well as men but thats influential not genius. if asked to name the top 10 guitar players of all time a lot of peoples lists would have duane, hendrix, beck, page, clapton, evh, etc but for example out of those 6 guys i'd say only 2 were actually adding something new as the years went on and thats beck and hendrix. hendrix created so much in such a short amount of time where as page stole the bow on the strings bit and has done nothing new in over 30 years.

its all about who was thinking outside the box and adding new elements to music not who was a great player or who started a trend. a true genius is constantly changing and adding and taking their genre to another level.
