Alright, I am drawing on the expertise of you Hittin' the Web computer guys, I need some help!

I had a laptop, 4 years old, with VISTA. I upgraded to Windows 7, from a friend, and the computer would just crash completely on me within 10 minutes with the BSOD. So, I backed up files, and did an install of XP Professional, thinking the 'size' of 7 was the issue.

Now, I realize not everything was properly backed up. Can I access the Windows 7 OS with that data, etc. or is it lost forever? If so, how do I 'tell' the machine how to boot up with 7 vs. XP? THANK YOU in advance for any help/guidance.

peace,
jj

Not sure if I got you right but .....

In Vista, if you go to the RUN command (in classic it was on the start menu) - type MSCONFIG - one of the tabs'll let you select which of the installed Op systems to boot up by default.

Do you have two operating systems installed side by side or are you trying to restore Win 7 backups with XP Pro?

Several Questions:

1) Did you make your recovery discs (not a backup) for your laptop when you first got it?

2) Was the Win 7 install from a 3 user disc and your friend had one left on it?

3) How did you install XP on top of the Win 7? Did you do a full format on the hard drive, or just deleted the Win7 folders?

4) Did the BSOD give you any STOP codes (a series of letters and numbers that look like this 0xc000000ef)? If so, try to give them in a reply.

1. I did not make recovery discs, not my computer.
2. Win 7 was a fresh install, an extra copy 7
3. I am guessing a full format on the HD. Win7 was the OS, I installed the XP Pro disc, not sure if it 'partitioned' the remaining space on the HD, making the win7 inaccessible or what.
4. The BSOD were so blurry that I could not read anything they said. I cannot access the Win7 OS, so I wouldn't be able to reply with those 0x00000ef, etc.

I installed easyBCD and the only OS it 'found' to boot up on the C drive was Win7. Even though I was in XP. Obviously I'm not a bowler, so I am a little wet behind the ears. Once I get off my 'course' I get pretty lost.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU in advance for any help, guidance. It is very much appreciated!!!

And I do not believe they are side by side, I believe I installed XP on top of Win7.
