Recently I found my old pictures from the Allman Brothers concert at the Legend Valley Dixie jam in central Ohio back in 1979. It was a good day and a fun time, despite the wet, muddy scene that it was. It wasa big ole party. I remember a vodka-spiked watermelon and a guy had the good idea of bringing in a keg of beer on a wheel chair and the authorities were cool with it.

The bands on the bill that day included The Outlaws, Pure Prairie league and McGuffey Lane and more. As for the Allman Brothers, they were on fire. This was after Dickey regrouped the band after Gregg's problems and Butch saying he'd never work with Gregg and all that went down in the late 1970s. Dangerous Dan Toler and Dickey were smoking, and Bonnie Bramlett was in tow as well. This was a time when they just came out with Enightened Rogues, which is still a fave album of mine, especially the song "Can't Take It With You," a song with fire that's got the stank on it, in a very good way. They were back to playing southern rock again after the leisure suit "Win, Lose or Draw" period. I distinctly remember, towards the end of the show, all of the members of the ABB shaking hands and smiling and feeling good about their performance and the audience response. It was a good day for all involved.

Nice pics. I love old concert photos. No advertising plastered everywhere, no cell phones, no ring of yellow shirt security in front of the stage. Just people having fun . When did it all start to head south ?

Actually I think the end came with the Who concert in Cincy on December 3rd, 1979.

One more low tech fact on these pics - they were taken on one of those square 410 cameras. But, grainy or not, a glimmer of memories exist.

This Tour included one Mr. Jim Essery on harp...kind of a forgotten man through time... I'm guessing that's Jim in the white shirt w/red shoulders. I lived in Fullerton, Ca. at the time of this Tour and was lucky enough to see two shows; didn't find out 'til later that Jim was from the Fullerton area as well...

Thanks for posting these pics, cool memories

Bonnie Bramlett added a whole different dimension to the band, I really liked that line up.

Same here, these are really cool -- gosh w/the Bus & the boat in background there & the general look w/the headbands/crowd flags etc., they look so much like from an earlier era!! Thanks for sharing -- this was a great period for the ABB

heh heh !! Just noticed that. Who the hell decided to tow a boat to the concert ? Yeah, we'll catch the ABB and then drop the boat in the water for some fishing. That's classic.

I sure miss low tech grainy images like so! I find today's digital images a lot sharper but totally lacking the warmth and character of old photographs like these.

Here is some real time background on what was going on with the Allman Brothers band at that time. I have a copy of Rolling Stone from May 3rd, 1979 that includes a four page article on the Allman Brothers written by Robert Palmer. In it they have just gotten back together. Says the article;

quote:
A year ago, putting the band back together didn't look easy, or even possible. "There is no way we can work with Gregg Allman again, ever," Dickey Betts said in 1976 after Gregg testified against the former personal road manager, Scooter Herring, in his widely publicized drug trial. That sounded pretty final. But a final reunion was affected and an album called Enlightened Rogues was recorded.....In just two weeks the album has gone Platinum, jumping into the top fifteen on the trade magazine charts and still bulleting rapidly upward. And, in New York, two concerts were announced on one radio station, WNEW-FM, just once, on a saturday morning, and they sold out in an hour and a half.

As a part of writing this article, Palmer is watching the ABB's rehearsal and Gregg is not there because he was in an auto accident earlier that day. As follows from the article;

quote:
After only a little playing, Dickey Betts leaves the rehearsal with a purposeful look on his face. This reporter isn't supposed to be in on what follows, but according to a reliable source, what happens is this; Dickey gets in touch with Gregg, who says he is still a little shook up from the accident but is leaving for Sarasota tonight. Dickey tells him to sit tight, hires a small plane and flies to Daytona Beach to pick him up. They return at seven in the morning.

Here is Gregg in the article talking about his singing voice on the Enlightened Rogues album;

quote:
"Yeah", he says, "It seems like I'm finally getting all the notes right. I used to sing sharp quite a bit, which is worse than singing flat. Plus, getting away from the, ahh, depressants, that also helps greatly. But this album came off better than any album we've done before. I think we really did it like a bunch of pros, man. We took six weeks and rehearsed it at the warehouse, took a little bit of time off, then went in there and slambang got it done. We knew what we were doing, plus we worked with Tommy Dowd, whose the best in my book. I enjoyed cutting this album more than any one I have ever cut. Except," he chuckles, "At Fillmore East."

Here is more from the article, Butch's take on the band getting back together after the mid-70s ABB problems;

quote:
"The first time Phil called me, I said no, no way. I had my own band, ( a jazz-rock group called Trucks) and I was studying at Florida State, and I just wasn't interested. Then one day I was playing in Tampa with my band and I ran into Dickey. We sat up all night and we talked and he played some new tunes for me, including 'Crazy Love,' and I started to get excited. I saw how together Dickey was, I'd finally got over a bad drinking problem I had, and he said Gregg seemed to be in excellent shape. So we started seriously talking about putting it back together at that point."

As it was in 1979.

Derek H
