I hate Christmas music. My wife would play it from Oct-Jan.
She does not listen to ABB-DTB-Mule etc. But goes to their concerts.
She knows I ain't going to a Christmas concert. Unless forced to go.

What do ya Say?

We have a bunch, mostly because my wife likes Christmas music and we've been hosting a big family party for the last ten years or so.

Luckily, she has great taste in music, so we've been building a good collection. Some personal favorites:

Christmas ~ Jorma Kaukonen (wow!)

Christmas ~ Bruce Cockburn (some truly beautiful music from around the world)

Alligator Records Christmas Collection ~ the blues one (can't go wrong with Koko Taylor, Charles Brown, or Son Seals at Christmas time)

James Brown's Funky Christmas ~ James Brown (good gawd!)

Celebremos Navidad ~ Yomo Toro (master of the cuatro - great stuff)

Asalto Navideno Vol I & 11 ~ Willie Colon w/ Yomo Toro (even more Latin grooves than the Yomo solo)

Christmas Island ~ Jimmy Buffett (fun takes on classics, and some great originals)

Alligator Stomp Vol. 4 ~ A Cajun Christmas (Beausoleil and the Doucet family contributions stand out)

Smooth Grooves' Sensual Christmas ~ The Staples, Isaac Hayes, the O'Jays, the Impressions, Rufus Thomas (awww yeah, Merry Christmas, baby)

Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas ~ Dancing Cat Records' collection of the gorgeous traditional slack key guitar sound (almost makes you picture the snow on the palm trees)

What can I say? We're dorks.

The only Christmas music I own, and will ever own, is James Browns Funky Christmas, "Go Power At Christmastime" is pretty cool.

Red House......followed by Berry's ..Hoochie Coochie Man.....
and if i want the hair (?) on the back of my neck to stand up I'll play Oh Happy Day
by Edwin Hakwins singers.(strictly for the emotional power of the music...couldn't care less about the specific message).........but what emotion!!

I like Christmas music, but not until Dec 20 or so. I can't believe
Radio stations that play Christmas music all the time starting
at Halloween. When you over do anything it loses its specialness.

Some of my favorite Christmas music:

GRP Christmas Collection Vol 1,2.3 - OK light jazz, good for background
music for decorating, parties, ect.

Larry Carlton's "Christmas at My House", really good, Larry and
his LA friends. Really good playing full of heart.

Shawn Colvin's "Holiday Songs and Lullabies" is really good
She made this for her daughter. The Care shows.

Phil Manzerna and Andy MacKay of Roxy Music made a collection
of tradition english Christmas music with street
musicians called "Christmas- The Players"
Really good instrumentals.

Of course there is Handel's "Messiah" I have a really nice
recording with the London Symphony and Chorus under
Sir Colin Davis. Stunning music. I save this for
Christmas Day. Keeps me grounded in the religious
meaning of the day.

On Christmas Eve I have to hear Mahilia Jackson
and her collection: "Silent Night Holy Night"
Christmas Music doesn't get any better than this.

May God Bless each and every one of you this Christmas.

Peace
John

I'm surprised that no ones mentioned it so far, maybe because not many have heard of it, but one I like is Chuck Leavell's "Whats In That Bag?", picked it up last year, not in many stores but I think I got it from cdnow.

Generally start playing some now, mostly traditional stuff, multi-artist compilations with Bing Crosby and the like, some good classical tunes also, and of course, The Nutcracker as well as some children's tunes for little Madeleine, the five year old ABB fan. I love this time of year. Getting ready for next Sunday's donation of fresh fruits and vegetables to some needy families up here.

I recorded an old-time Christmas album many years ago, but I lost interest in it and never released it. I did most of the standard Christmas songs, like Joy To The World, but I played it with clawhammer banjo, fiddle, bass, guitar, and some mandolin. I might have to dig that out and listen to it.

I have a few . . . Recently picked up Jon Anderson's three ships thanks to a brother here . . . a few standards and lots of holiday-spirit originals.

All time favorite though, by the best living female vocalist, is Christmas with Yolanda Adams.

Well . . . who knows if she's the best, but she's my favorite.

I'd be really surprised if we own any, so no. Even if we did, I sure wouldn't play it, and I'd throw on the headphones and play some ABB in any case...

We usually play some of ours the week of Christmas but I hear some on the radio on the way to and from work occasionally.
I've been wanting to get that Chuck Leavell CD. Gotta look online I guess.

well, officially its not christmas for me till i hear "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses (??)...you know the one: "you mean you forgot cranberry too?"

but, i heard that back in October.

quote:
Christmas ~ Jorma Kaukonen (wow!)
Our family favorite ("And boy - was he pissed!") Downhill Sled Ride is one of my favorites on there.

also, i really like this one tune of of "A very special Christmas" - the one by Run DMC (i know!) it's got this really cool beat.....i think it's called Christmas in Harlem. probably the only sorta-rap song i listen to on purpose.

Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but right now I am listening to "Christmas Time Again" by everyone's new favorite band, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
