Pretty much what most thought, Islanders went all "Hanson Brothers" on the Penguins on Friday night, this after the Pens goalie, Johnson knocked Isles goalie, Rick DiPietro out with 1 shot a week ago.

Anyway, rematch on the Island consisted of 14 fighting majors, 21 misconducts, and a total of 346 penalty minutes between the 2 teams.

Oh yeah, and the Islanders won 9-3....

If you haven't been paying attention the Islanders have been building a nice young core of players. All they need is for Wang to open the purse strings and add a couple of key vets to the lineup and they are gonna be really good in not too long. You will see!

Love a meaningful line brawl. Not enough of them in the show. Still happens in the lower pros and junior. Can really bring a team together.
My Avs need a big dose of grit and sandpaper. Fell from 6th to 14th in in 2 weeks.

How long does Dipetro have left on that 15 year contract ??

From Severance Colorado and going to Pens game Wed. We are too small on "D" and get pushed around and outworked in our own end too many times . It is okay to have 1 Liles type "D" man on your team but not 4 in the same game . Our goaltending is atrocious this year , glad we didn't sign Andy long term . Changes need to be made prior to us competing for anything anytime soon...

Who cares about the DiPeatro contract. Per year it is not that bad and we can always make him the backup should he not regain form. They do need to add a key vet or two next season to take this young core to the next level.

By the time the Islanders will be contenders again (if they will be) they will be playing in Quebec City. The Lighthouse Project is DOA and Charles Wang has stated he will never re-up with Nassau Colisseum. The Islanders have been a shell of their championship days ever since Dale Hunter cheap shotted Pierre Turgeon. As a Rangers fan the rivalry has been virtually non existent for about 15 years and is one I miss a great deal. Coming out and throwing down against the Pens showed me a heart and soul that's been missing from that team for ages, and given their fans some hope that's been missing for a long time.

That is probably true unless the Town of Hempstead get their feet out of there @sses. It will be a sad day and when I cross that path I will have to figure out if I want to continue rooting for them wherever they move or to take on a new team. Right now for the first time in years I am beginning to enjoy watching this young core of players mature and gain character!

Wouldn't it be ironic if this team were to move in 2016 and win the Cup just like Colorado won the Cup the year they left Quebec. I also miss the old Rangers/Islanders rivalry which hasn't existed since the Rangers smoked the Islanders four straight in the '94 playoffs when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup.

I think any Montreal Canadiens fan could easily dispute your best team ever claim. Henri Richard was able to win 11 Cups during his career with one team. How many other teams have even won 11 cups? Only missed winning 4 cups over a 15 year span in 60s-70s. From 75-78, they only lost 29 games and only lost 8 games in a single season. The amount of records held is massive.

The Islanders were awesome but not the best team ever.

Totally agree. I think they would have been good if not for some of the injuries in the beginning of this year. They actually have a good young core. TOH does need to get their heads out of their arses.

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) – Zenon Konopka is ready to rumble — again.

This time Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux is drawing the ire of the Islanders’ enforcer.

Lemieux, in a statement issued Sunday after a fight-filled game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Islanders, said the NHL failed in its punishment of New York — and went so far as to question whether he wanted to stay in the league.

“Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty,” Lemieux said. “It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.”

Konopka doesn’t agree.

“I can’t believe he is so far removed from the game that he doesn’t realize in the heat of the moment what happens,” Konopka told the Ottawa Citizen. “Obviously, we’re going to do everything we can to protect our players in here. It’s not an easy job to do it, but we’re worried about each other, not outsiders.”

The NHL suspended New York forwards Trevor Gillies for nine games and Matt Martin for four.

“You look at Trevor Gillies,” Konopka said. “He’s a first time offender. He hits a guy, throws a few punches, he gets a nine-game suspension. The guy’s got a wife, two kids and plays in the East Coast Hockey League and AHL most of his career and now he’s going to lose $35,000. And it’s not right. Obviously, the league has their job and not mine, but in here, we feel for him. It hurts not to have Trevor in lineup for nine games. It hurts me, personally, my buddy, out $35,000.”

The two major brawls Friday night were sparked by Martin and Gillies.

The first broke out in the second period when Martin jumped Max Talbot from behind near center ice and started a fight, presumably in retaliation for an unpenalized hit delivered by Talbot on Feb. 2 against Islanders forward Blake Comeau, who hasn’t played since because of a concussion.

“Montreal and Boston, they play a game and it’s great old-time hockey, it’s ‘wow, this is awesome, the rivalry’,” Konopka said. “Then we have a game and now we’re getting crucified for it.”

The NHL also hit the team with a $100,000 fine late Saturday night, saying the Islanders “must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players.”

“I don’t understand how this $100,000 gets thrown into the mix,” Konopka seethed.

Lemieux, who had a Hockey Hall of Fame playing career with the Penguins, will no longer grace Konopka’s bedroom in poster form.

“As soon as I get home, I’m taking the poster of Mario on my bedroom door down.”

I don't think mario will lose much sleep over Zenon taking his poster down.

He will likely get in trouble for speaking out. The media seeks him out because he always gives them quotes but not always what is best for his career. He should stay quiet because Martin deserved far more suspension. If he had connected with that suckerpunch, it would have been the Bertuzzi affair all over again. The difference was Bertuzzi challenged Moore face to face and he kept declining. Martin was just going to suckerpunch him into tomorrow. Suprised he got so little.

I thought that the worst act wasn't even a fight but a real cheap play. Trying to hammer a guy's head and back into the crossbar is nuts. Orpik should of got a big suspension for throwing Grabner into the net. Intentional and a really dangerous act and his own goalie nearly got hurt bad also.

The rest of it is just two teams taking it to the extreme. Entertaining for those that enjoy the fights. I didn't think there were too many good fights really.

For those that didn't see it.

I think the Islanders were the best team ever for a five year period. There is no disputing that the Canadians are the best all time team for all of their Cup Championships and they did win six Cups in a row. They are the Yankees of hockey. However, they never won 19 consecutive playoff series to do it which is an incredibly hard thing to accomplish. There were less and shorter series each year back then when the Canadians had their dynasties. What that Islanders team did winning 19 playoff series in a row has never been matched in pro hockey or any other professional sport, not even by the Yankees and I doubt that achievement will ever be matched.

Mario the whiner who was a cry baby his whole playing career should STFU because his team is the dirtiest team in hockey and currently lead the league in fighting and major penalties. He and the league need to get their players under check if they don't want this to happen again. There are two sets of rules, one for the so called elite teams and one for everyone else.

This game had been building up for quite a while. Over the last two seasons there have been at least a dozen cheap hits and cheap shots leading to Islanders injuries. The chump that Martin jumped knocked an Islanders player Blake Comeou out with a concussion just a week before that game with a dirty blind side hit and no punishment from the league whatsoever. Cooke ran Tutin from behind with a wicked hit similar to the one that has probably ended Marc Savard's career and got only a four game suspension. Gillies on the Islanders got nine games for a much less dangerous hit and he is a first time offender. Where is the equity there??? Not that Martin or especially Gillies didn't deserve suspensions but Pittsburgh and other teams have done much much worse and not been punished properly.

That is what led up to Friday's fight night. The Islanders are fed up with being taken advantage of and aren't gonna take it any more and I applaud that. And comparing what Martin did to what Bertuzzi did is just plain ridiculous!!! Martin obviously held back if you watch the tape. Had he wanted to grab Talbot from behind and drive him into the ice with all of his weight behind it he certainly could have. He didn't. He threw a half assed punch from behind that didn't connect and wouldn't have hurt him had it connected. He then waited for Talbot to respond but Talbot turtled like the wussy he is. What Gillies did following the hit is what bothered me about him. No need to continue to punch someone when they are down and hurt and then to taunt them the way he did. He deserved the 9 games and maybe more.

Godard on the other hand should have gotten at least a few more games. He got the mandatory 10 for leaving the bench but deserved more for being a wussy third man in. There was no need for him to interfere with Haley and Johnson. Johnson proved the week before with DiPeatro that he is more than capable of dropping the gloves. He was fresh and Haley was coming straight from a fight so if anything Johnson had the advantage. Godard should have gotten more but no, he is from Mario's team. If you are gonna have two sets of justice this is what is gonna happen. The sooner the league figures that out the sooner you will stop seeing this type of game.

So tell cry baby Mario to stick it up his @ss and get his own dirty team in line. Tell Colin Campbell that justice should be even for ALL teams when they deserve it if he doesn't want to see what happened Friday again. The young Islanders aren't gonna sit back and be abused any more and that is refreshing to this Islanders fan who has had to watch these dirty teams and players take advantage of these young kids game after game over the last couple of seasons.

I had no problem with the hit that sent Grabner into the goal cage. Grabner is very fast and was driving to the net and the hit that sent him into the goal cage was a clean hit IMO. It wasn't from behind and it wasn't a high hit IMO.
