NY REP. CHRISTOPHER LEE ABRUPTLY RESIGNS

By Andrew Miga, Associated Press
Feb. 9, 2011

WASHINGTON -- A New York congressman abruptly resigned his seat
Wednesday, saying he was quitting because he regretted actions that
have hurt his family and others.

The gossip website Gawker reported Wednesday that Rep. Christopher Lee,
a married two-term Republican lawmaker, had sent a shirtless photo of
himself to a woman he had met on Craigslist.

Lee said in an e-mailed statement that his resignation was effective immediately.
The statement offered no confirmation or details of a Craigslist posting.

"I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my
constituents." Lee said. "I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have
made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their
forgiveness."

Added Lee: "The challenges we face in Western New York and across the
country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, so I am
announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately."

An anonymous woman described as 34-year-old Maryland resident and
government employee provided Gawker with e-mails she said were an
exchange between her and Lee in response to an ad she placed in
the "Women Seeking Men" section of Craigslist.

Gawker reported that Lee identified himself as a divorced lobbyist and sent
a photo of himself posing shirtless. The woman eventually broke off the
contact with Lee after becoming suspicious that he had misrepresented
himself, according to Gawker.

The shirtless photo was only part of the issue. The actual scandal involved him sending the photos to a woman who was not his wife that he 'met' through a Craigslist ad.

There's interesting commentary on the web about the Lee scandal....

"Lee should get together with Vitter, Sanford, Ensign and
Craig and form a therapy group."

"What is it with sex and Republicans? While they're out on
the House floor trying to rob women of their gynecologist,
reproductive privacy and control of their bodies, they're out
trolling on Craiglist?"

Observation from Washington Monthly;

A FIT, FUN, UNEMPLOYED GUY.... Usually, politicians' career-crushing controversies take a while, and linger for weeks, if not months. Yesterday, the life-cycle of Christopher Lee's scandal didn't quite last four hours.

Rep. Chris Lee of New York abruptly resigned Wednesday evening, hours after a gossip Web site reported that the married Republican had allegedly sent flirtatious e-mail messages and a shirtless photo of himself to a woman he met online.

Lee experienced his fall from grace in a single afternoon, undone at the speed of the digital age. At lunchtime Wednesday, he was an obscure but promising second-term congressman. Then, at 2:33 p.m., the Web site Gawker posted an alleged e-mail exchange between a man who used Lee's name - but identified himself as a divorced lobbyist - and an unidentified woman. Gawker reported that the two had met through the personals section of Craigslist.

After that, the familiar cycles of a Washington sex scandal were compressed into a blur of tweets and news alerts. There was confusion, a hint of denial, then a pledge from Lee to "work it out" with his wife.

By 6 p.m., a clerk was announcing Lee's resignation in the House chamber.

Lee, a two-term lawmaker from Buffalo, was considered a rising star in Republican politics, and was recently given a covered spot on the House Ways and Means Committee. One topless photo later, all of this is gone.

The developments were more than a little surprising, not only because of Lee's spectacularly dumb actions, but also because he resigned so quickly -- Republicans, especially those caught up in sex scandals, generally don't step down.

Indeed, if we're measuring controversies on the Scandal Richter Scale, Lee's story doesn't seem nearly as serious as some of his Republican colleagues. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) got caught with prostitutes, refused to resign, sought re-election, and won. Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) carried on a lengthy extra-marital relationship with one of his aides, who happened to be married to another one of his aides. Ensign's parents tried to pay off the mistress' family, and the senator arranged lobbying work for his mistress' husband. He refused to resign, and he's running for another term, too. Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) got caught seeking sex in an airport bathroom, and even he didn't resign.

Lee's story is certainly sleazy, but based solely on what we know so far, it pales in comparison to some of these other Republicans' scandals.

So, why'd he resign while the others didn't? It's speculative, of course, but it's possible there was far more dirt, and Lee quit to avoid further humiliation. Maybe Republican leaders who tolerated the previous controversies didn't want any distractions, so they demanded Lee's resignation.

Or maybe it's just the simple fact that we live in an era when images have more of an impact than than anything else. Vitter, Ensign, and the like were at the center of ugly controversies, but there's no single photograph to be aired over and over again, the way there is with Lee's topless photo of himself.

Visuals, in other words, resonate.

As for the month-old 112th Congress, David Dayen had this eye-opening observation: "Number of House resignations this year: 2. Number of pieces of legislation signed into law: 0."

I was going to try the same pose in the bathroom mirror and send it to my wife but i got scared because i figured she'd laugh at me!....but on a serious note, these politicians act untouchable at times and then as soon as the sh*t hits the fan they want to run and hide..well if you are stupid enough to take the picture and e-mail it to a woman, be man enough to take the heat and man enough to read your own resignation letter!

You know, I sort of respect Rep Lee for being a good soldier and promptly falling on his sword for the good of his party. Unlike say Sen Ensign.

So the House GOP can get back to its important work. Of posturing on losing battles of abortion and healthcare!

Weiner tries to move beyond Twitter
By: Ben Smith
June 1, 2011 04:37 AM EDT

Trying to put last weekend’s ambiguous online miniscandal behind him, Rep. Anthony Weiner told reporters outside his office Tuesday that he’s “not going to talk about this anymore.”

But Weiner, a veteran and champion of New York City’s media scrum, may be the single worst-placed congressman to hunker down and wait for a flap to fade.

The Queens congressman is a combative MSNBC star with a corresponding conservative target on his back. He is also viewed as the front-runner in what is already shaping up as an intensely competitive Democratic primary for the 2013 election to replace Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He’s a media favorite, a source par excellence and a magnet for cable news cameras — on full display in two interviews broadcast by CNN on Tuesday.

“It ain’t done. We don’t know what the facts are,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a veteran New York Democratic consultant. “There are too many reporters asking too many questions to avoid any of this.”

After a long weekend’s fuss over a photograph of a man’s crotch, sent over his Twitter account, Weiner appears to have decided not to pursue an investigation that would conclusively settle how the image made its way online. He also refused repeatedly to answer direct questions about whether he’d taken or sent the photograph.

On Wednesday, Weiner said he “can’t say with certitude” that the photo sent using his Twitter account isn’t of him. “I didn’t send that picture out,” Weiner said in a Wednesday afternoon interview with NBC News.

Technical data could settle the question of whether he sent it. The photograph was uploaded to the site yfrog.com, which is integrated with Twitter, and either Twitter, yfrog, or both almost definitely have logs indicating the unique digital address of the computer or device that sent the image. (Twitter declined to comment on a specific customer; Imageshack, which owns yfrog, didn’t respond to a request for comment.) But Weiner told reporters, in a pair of impromptu and increasingly testy interviews outside his office on Capitol Hill, that he didn’t think asking the companies for that information or turning to law enforcement would end the story.

“I’m not convinced that there’s any value of anymore of me talking about it,” he said.

Weiner’s flat refusal to engage may or may not serve him well in Washington’s totally partisan environment, in which Democrats will defend him, and Republicans attack him, as usual. Back in New York, meanwhile, allies of his rivals - former comptroller William Thompson, Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Democrats all - are licking their chops.

“This is New York - he’s in deep doo-doo when it comes to future aspirations,” said a pleased adviser to one of his rivals. “You’ve got every enemy of his, and interested political reporters, all digging, because there’s something too weird about this.”

Stuart Applebaum, the president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union and a Weiner ally, said Weiner was right to play the matter as a “distraction” and to suggest that he was targeted for the sort of outspoken, combative liberalism that is a selling point in New York.

“The likely reason that Congressman Weiner would be targeted by a hacker is to quiet his voice,” he said. “He shouldn’t let that happen.”

After a swirl of allegations and bloggers’ attempts at forensic online detective work, there appear to be only three possible scenarios for what actually happened, none of them completely straightforward.

If Weiner, who spends a great deal of time on Twitter, actually had intended to send the photograph privately, he would have had to make two basic technical mistakes: First, putting the symbol “@” instead of the letter “d” in front of his correspondent’s name, or some other error that would turn a private message public; and second, imagining that a photograph on the public image-sharing site could be private.

The second scenario - the “hacking” Weiner alleged - doesn’t require any technical skill, and isn’t really worthy of the name. A foe would have simply guessed his Twitter password, logged in to Twitter as him through an application like Tweetdeck or through yfrog, and posted the photograph.

Though online miscreants often change a victim’s passwords, this one would not have: Weiner immediately deleted not just the offending tweet, but his entire yfrog account.

This sort of attack would be illegal as well as unusual, and some techies called it unlikely. Weiner’s immediate complaint online that his Facebook account had been hacked left some puzzled.

The notion that the Twitter post was connected to a Facebook hack is “bizarre,” said Patrick Ruffini, a Republican Internet consultant.

But other close observers of the web news scene argued that the way in which the tweet came to light was the best indication that foul play might be involved: It was noticed by a Twitter user, Dan Wolfe, who had been among a group of conservatives obsessing for weeks about the fact that Weiner interacted on Twitter with young women.

“Any ‘new’ evidence in some weird thing that right-wing [dirty tricks] specialists have been tracking for a while should be viewed with suspicion,” said a top Democratic online strategist, one of many to point out that sites run by Andrew Breitbart - whose credibility has been threatened by the posting of heavily edited videos - were among the first to publicize the tweet, though not the first to notice it.

There is a third technical possibility: That the photograph came from Weiner’s phone, but that he hadn’t meant to post it at all; regular users of Twitter are accustomed to the occasional random characters and bad links that come from clumsy fingers or tight pockets, though few that spectacular.

In any case, Twitter or yfrog would have data indicating which device posted the image.

Weiner tried vainly to turn the subject back to policy Tuesday, perhaps recognizing that he’d simply be forced to repeat himself until reporters got bored. And sympathetic observers - who assume Weiner is the victim - say he’s playing it just right.

“He’s relying on the absurdity of the situation and people’s good sense to move on,” said Doug Muzzio, a professor of public affairs at Baruch College and longtime observer of the city’s politics, who said he didn’t think Weiner could possibly have taken the picture himself.

“Anthony may be a little nuts, but he ain’t that crazy,” he said. “It would be so utterly stupid that it’s beyond the politicians’ rule that nothing’s too stupid.”
