Living in the barracks I have been getting lots of music from my shipmates, a lot of stuff I have never heard of before. Anyway, the album "The Guitars That Rule the World, Vol. I" has a song on it called "Willie and Poor Bob" by "Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes". It is an acoustic medley with Johnny Neel playing harp throughout a lot of it too. I recognize a lot of the riffs as being parts to songs that the Brothers did throughout the early 90's, even in to the Jack Pearson period- Steady Rollin' Man, Pony Boy, If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day, Blues at Midnight . . . Funny thing is that there isn't one word sung, just a lot of humming and howling. I have to say it sounds like one helluva studio jam, a sketch of a bunch of pieces that became full tunes later.

Any one familiar with this? Was it ever on an official release- DBB, etc.?

It was on a CD produced by Guitar World magazine. It's Dickey, Warren & Johnny Neel playing an arrangement of traditional delta blues themes. "Willie and Poor Bob" alludes to Robert Johnson's "Crossroad Blues":

I went to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
I went to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above "Have mercy, now save poor Bob, if you please

AND

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown
Lord, that I'm standin' at the crossroad, babe, I believe I'm sinkin' down

I would say there is a good possibility that it is Johnny Neel. If you listen to this right along with the MTV Unplugged stuff it is dead-on Johnny Neel. It really doesn't sound much like Thom Doucette. The credit is probably undeserved.

As far as I know, the version on the Collectors cd is actually the Warren Dickey version. It's just not credited to Warren. But it's the same version as being discussed here...
