you need to get 3rd party software to copy from ipod to pc (ie senuti for Mac), unless you already have the data from the ipods on a pc already. then, you need to authorize each ipod for each pc.

I just downloaded 2 programs - ipod2ipod and AVCWare ipod to ipod. I am hesitant to use either until someone that has had some success chimes in here. I am definitely worried about damaging either device.
thanks

You can copy the data from the iPod to your computer to another iPod by going to My Computer, then right click the ipod as it's shown in My Computer, click Explore. It will show the folders on the iPod.

Sometimes the folder is hidden because it is considered a system file. So you may have to click on 'Tools' at the top of the window and go to 'Folder Options' in the Tools Menu. Under the 'View' tab, find the subfolder called 'Hidden files and folders' and select the option 'Show hidden files and folders'. then click OK.

Open the 'iPod_Control' folder then open the 'Music' folder. These folders are named randomly and your music is impossible to find individually. The files have weird numerical names usually but they retain all the ID3 tags and track information. Copy them to a new folder on your hard drive. To copy them to a new iPod add the songs to iTunes and then copy to the new device.

This all assumes you're using Windows XP. It is similar in Vista & 7.

I know it's not directly copying but if you're worried about third party software, you don't need it for this method.

didn't know you could do that.

once you get everything all set, whatever method you choose, it would be worth it to have a backup copy of everything on your ipod somewhere accessible - if it doesn't fit on your pc then consisder accessory hard drive (easiest) or multiple dvds. You will be thankful if you are unfortunate enough to experience a crash, need to re-format, loss, stolen, etc.

Ok I tried the method just extracting the files from the ipod to my pc but got many error messages that it could not copy. So I took a chance and tried the AVCWare software and plugged my ipod classic into my pc (after turning off the setting that opens itunes when connecting an ipod). I was able to extract probably 40 songs from my classic, put them into a new folder in my music then ejected my ipod classic. I plugged my touch in, transferred the tunes to itunes then sent them to the touch. No problems at all, album covers and everything are all good and it sounds great. I did notice that the album cover pic on my classic changed to a bugs bunny cartoon i purchased from itunes a couple of years ago. So, it may wreak a little havoc with my classic, but once I copy enough music to my touch, I could delete the whole library on the classic and maybe sell it. Thanks for any continued help.

$25 program allows you to copy music and video from one I-Pod to your computer, then from computer to second I-pod. Works well!

I pulled 25 GB of music off my ipod this way and backed them up on DVDs.

So, after trying 3rd party software, which you have to pay for at some point or deal with restrictions on how many songs you can extract at a time, I decided to give a go to the method where you bring the files off the ipod directly to pc - even though you have to follow a couple of steps to find the music once you open up the ipod (this is with itunes closed) I have had excellent luck so far - I realized the error messages I got last time were for a random tune, not like the whole folder would not transfer. I think I know why - my buddy plugged my ipod into his itunes and gave me his whole library - however I noticed that songs he purchased from itunes would not open in my ipod without his username/pw - no big deal and I will assume these are the very few files not being transferred. I have sent these files extracted from ipod to pc and now back to itunes. Each individual file is not full of complete albums, they are scattered. But when I send to itunes it puts them back in album oder.
