Hahahahaha Canada........that's hilarious.

Reminds me of the South Park episode where Canada went on strike and then got pi$$ed off when nobody cared.

I wish the US would ban "Carry On Wayward Son," "Dust In The Wind" and "Point Of Know Return" so the radio stations would be forced to play other Kansas songs.

In their defense, pretty sure the Canadian government has appologized for Celine Dion and Bryan Adams on multiple occasions.

Well, it only took 'em about 30 years.

At least they just banned it - as opposed to changing the lyrics and have someone (besides Knopfler) sing over the original.

Mark Knopfler actually came under some fire waaaay back the the song was released. He pointed out the the lyric was from the perspective of an idiot. In other words, it was used in proper context. A moron wouldn't be likely to say, "see the homosexual with the ear ring and the makeup ...".

I guess I'm glad to see that Canada is every bit as progressive as American college professors (the ones at Auburn, anyway) when it comes to censorship.

Exactly. Knopfler was playing a character, the song is a four-minute gem of a character study.

There ought to be some sort of grandfather clause, that if they don't ban it w/in 2 yrs of release, then it's ok.

While our friends from the north were at it , they should have included Bohemian Rhapsody in that legislation . Better still , Queen's entire catalog .

I always wondered how Roger Daltrey got away with "Who the f%ck are you?" on American radio.

Enough of this PC s**t already. I saw the most recent Broadway Revival of West Side Story and whenever Hispanic characters sang "I Feel Pretty" and "Tonight" they sang the songs in Spanish. I'm relatively bilingual, but this was one of my favorite shows as a kid and it ruined it for me.

Mark Twain used the n word - let it be
Stephen Sondheim wrote English lyrics. let them be
there are fa**ots in Dire Straights.

and, I am Jewish, and Springtime for Hitler is Funny. Hpe it doesn't get edited out when The Producers gets revived

I can't live like this anymore

PS - and old British joke that sounds like it can also appply to Canada

Q - What does a Britishman say after sex?
A - Excuse me, I'm sorry, it will never happen again

That's almost as clever as the BBC banning the Kinks' "Lola" not because of the transvestite reference, but because the original version mentioned Coca Cola (later re-recorded to cherry cola).

On the other hand, the publicity is likely to give the recording a boost is sales, so good for Mark.

It was always my understanding that song came about from things that were actually overheard by the band.....I thought it was pretty great how they took the comments and made a hit song out of them.

Very nice of our good friends in Canada and their PC crowd to look out for my delicate sensibilities, but they should know that:

a). I'd rather poke myself in the arm repeatedly with a rusty guitar string than to ever listen to commercial radio again.

b). I have the song on disc.

c). There are at least 10 million other copies out there

That aint workin...

Same interview where I heard Knopfler explain that the song was written "in perspective" - said he was in NYC buying appliances at a department store and overheard a couple of deliverymen making comments while watching videos on MTV. Inspiration!

Hey RYAN97 - remember! It's the CONTEXT of the use of the word. Unless you've got a tune to go with that post, you ARE being offensive.

It all stemmed from a complaint which makes it even funnier.

You can still play Who Are You and use the F word or Brown Sugar or any other song full of sexual content but not faggot.

I have since complained about the N word used in Rap. With any luck I can get it all banned.

I think they should have banned it years ago but only because I don't like it.
