What deranged grounds do they have for doing this?

I wouldn't normally think this is a good idea, but I sure wish that pastor would be dragged into a dark alley and gang raped by some of the 'fags' God hates.

I hadn't heard about this, but somehow when I read the thread title I knew it would be about this group. And no, there is not a worse group of people. There are people who inflict more mayhem and damage, but I can't think of anyone with more evil in their heart.

This page has an embedded YouTube of Phelps explaining his take on the Arizona shooting, if anyone hasn't heard him speak before...

No. Not that I can think of right now.

Hopefully, as has been the case in other opportunities they've taken to spew their message of hate in the presence of folks sorrow over the loss of loved ones ... hopefully, the family of Christina Taylor Green will be insulated from having any exposure to these monstors who have made the choice to capitalize on their little girls death to spread their poison. The Green family should not have to endure more than they've already been handed.

I'm disgusted but not surprised that the Westboro freaks have decided to jump on this band wagon. It's just an extensioin of all the finger pointing and blaming that have been happening in the wake of this tragedy and the behaviour many have displayed in using this sad affair as an opportunity to further an agenda (and I'm not referring to news reports of the incident itself ... yes - that is newsworthy).

Loughner and his 'conscience dreams' point to a mentally disturbed individual - operative word 'individual' - and it doesn't sound like his disturbed state was a secret to many who had contact with him prior to this incident. He doesn't sound like the type who would align himself with any organization ... the whole concept of 'organization' is probably not even possible for somebody like him to relate to. I don't understand what drives someone to take a gun and assassinate innocents - or anyone. It's difficult for me to drum up any pity for this man after what he has done ... even knowing that he's sick.

Because he claims to be a Baptist and a Christian people like me get lumped up under his crazy ass beliefs!!!! It makes me soooooo angry. I am a Christian and a Baptist and I can assure you that I have NEVER heard a sermon that was preached that taught HATE. Jesus loved and accepted all and he did not come to Earth to CONDEM but SAVE!!!

But religion aside, why cant something be done about these horrible people? Freedom of Speech or Religion my a##...is this really what this country has come too?? I'm just about out of hope for any change.......uuuggghhh!!! The "alley" that BigAnn spoke of would be too good for these people. Surely they are breaking some kind of laws!

I don't think any reasonable person believes that these creatures are Christians. More like the antithesis of what a Christian is. I can feel your anger here, though. It's insulting. It also pissesmeoff that they are using their label of 'church' to take advantage of the government and operate as a tax-exempt entity while spreading their hate of that very same government and it's servicemen and women.

Here's a little good news......

Arizonans Rally to Prevent Westboro Church Disruption of Shooting Victims' Funerals

Arizona residents are locking arms to stop the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funerals for victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, with bikers and others organizing a massive counter-protest and state lawmakers fast-tracking a bill to hamstring the group.

The Kansas-based Westboro church is notorious for showing up at the funerals of dead soldiers and other high-profile gatherings wielding anti-gay signs.

But when the church announced it would picket the funeral Thursday for the 9-year-old girl fatally shot over the weekend at a Tucson grocery store by a gunman who allegedly killed five others and injured 14 others attending a town-hall session by Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Tucson- and Phoenix-area residents started organizing immediately.

They may not be able to stop them, but they plan on giving the grieving family as much of a buffer as possible between the protesters and the service.

"It makes me sick to my stomach," said Glen Littell, who's bringing a pack of bikers from the Phoenix Motorcycle Rider Group to Tucson on Thursday. "They're a stench from a slaughterhouse. We're just going to block the stench so the family can catch their breath."

Arizona state lawmakers are also scrambling -- to pass a bill that would order protesters to stay 300 feet away from the funeral. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the lead sponsor on the bill, said in an e-mail to colleagues that the plan is to suspend the rules Tuesday and fast-track the bill to protect the victims' families from the "hateful protest" from the Westboro Baptist Church.

She said she has the support of the Senate president and Gov. Jan Brewer, and the bill will go into effect "immediately" once it's signed.

"It's gonna happen," Sinema said. The senator said she was "real upset" after learning that the Westboro church planned on protesting but had a visceral reaction after reading their press release and sprung into action.

"It is the most disgusting thing I ever read in my entire life," she told FoxNews.com. "I literally threw up after I read it. I'm like, 'I'm gonna fix this.'"

Littell said his riders are not looking for any violent confrontations. But he told FoxNews.com that Arizona bikers are going to do "whatever we have to do" to cordon off the family from the protests. A group called the Patriot Guard Riders often does this when the Westboro church pickets military funerals, but Littell said that group is not traveling to Tucson, so "we're stepping in."

"Our sole purpose will be to allow that family some dignity and respect without having to worry about the a--holes," he said.

It's not clear whether the Westboro church intends to picket the funerals of all the victims of Saturday's attack. One press release from the group declared, "Thank God for the shooter," and said the group would picket the "funerals." Another release announced plans only for the protest on Thursday.

"God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America," the group said in a statement.

The Westboro church, led by Fred Phelps, believes that tragic events like the deaths of soldiers are punishment for tolerance of homosexuality.

The Supreme Court last fall heard arguments in a case brought against Phelps by the father of a soldier killed in Iraq whose funeral was protested by the group in 2006. The father, Albert Snyder, had won a multimillion-dollar verdict against the church, claiming invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The court is expected to issue a ruling soon on whether free speech can be curbed at specific locations and events.

Sinema said the bill she was introducing is modeled on an Ohio law that has withstood court challenge. It would technically apply to protesters at any Arizona funeral, though Sinema was clear that it's directed at Westboro.

She said she hopes the protesters and counter-protesters avoid any violence at the service. Meanwhile, several grassroots groups have popped up on Facebook calling on Tucson residents to intervene.

"We will create a wall of humanity to allow the families who've lost their love ones to hold their funerals in peace, held with dignity, and surrounded in love," one of the Facebook groups says in a statement.

Another calls for a "peaceful protest" of the church at the funeral Thursday for 9-year-old Christina Green.

Littell has notified the Pima County Sheriff's Department and has reached out to several other biker groups notifying them of their planned presence at Green's funeral. He crossed his fingers that the Hells Angels would join them.

"Nothing says stand back and be silent like a Hells Angels presence," he said.

Littell added that if the church moves on to picket other funerals, his riders will follow.

"We're getting word there's gonna be a pretty large presence of bikers," he said. "Word's spreading. And spreading quickly."

Wouldn't that just - in his eyes - make him a martyr for his hideously twisted cause?

Truly a disgusting bunch of people.

Still like my idea of a non profit organization buying up a few used fire trucks and spraying these evil scumbags down with high pressure water the way they fought riots in the 60s. If it were up to me those firetrucks would be filled with animal urine instead of water too. They are gonna rot in hell without a doubt!!!

WBC carries a 501(c)(3) exemption from the IRS.

The State of Kansas rejected their appeal to have the vehicles they use to drive to protests exempt from Kansas personal property tax. WBC made Establishment Clause claims in their appeal but the Court rejected this on the bounds that the signs used during the protests have both political and secular messages and fall oustide religious bounds.

Shirley Phelps-Roper responded to their (rare) courtroom loss with "The world is going to end soon anyway."

What's going to happen eventually is that someone is going to become sufficiently enraged at these satanists that they are going to hurt or kill one and then THEIR life will be ruined.

I watched about 45 seconds of fred and couldn't stand to hear any more.

Why can't a crazed gunman find HIS place, rather than a supermarket parking lot?

Thank yall for that. It does make me feel a little better. I just always feel "judged" I guess when people find out I am a Baptist, bc usually the latest fanatical idiot making the news claims to be one also. I had someone that I met in Macon and became fast friends with actually defriend me on Facebook after months of enjoying music and good times! His reason....."I didnt know you were a Bible Beating Baptist"!! He said he was afraid our politics and religious beliefs would not be "cohesive". That seems way more judgemental than this Baptist will ever be....go figure.

I love the saying "Just bc I am a Christian doesnt mean I am perfect or right, it just means I am saved" Heck my best friend is Gay and he and his partner come to Church with me all the time and are loved and welcomed with open arms.

And you are right, someone is going to get so pissed off or hurt by these folks that they are just going to take them all out and then THEIR life will be ruined. I expect it at every protest they have. Its just awful. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL people!!!
