Last night we were eating dinner, chicken fried steak...mmmm.
My 16 yr old son has always had a habit of taking too big of bites. Despite constantly reminding him, he adores foods and eats with gusto. He also has a mild form of Autism.
Midway through dinner, he starts coughing- like really choking! He put his hands around his neck where we showed him too, should this ever happen. I jumped behind him, locked my hands around him under his ribs and gave some upward/inward thrusts. Bam! A large piece of steak comes flying out.
He's fine now. Never came that close to losing one of my kids. Scared the living hell outta me. We are so blessed.

So happy this has a happy ending.. very scary and your swift and timely actions prove it all works..

many years ago my husband and I were vacationing in Aruba with my parents.. and we were eating at a very nice restaurant on the water , we had a lovely meal... my Mom had gotten some sort of Steak .. as were eating, laughing and enjoying ourselves ..I suddenly looked over at my Mom and she was trying not to make a scene .. but it was obvious something had stuck in her throat... when she finally Jumped up.. ( I think that is a normal reaction to chocking )... we all stood and were ready to grab her as well as all the staff.. when it finally dislodged on it's own... but let me tell you, that was a terrifying minute ... knowing what to do is sooooooooooo important... and if you are the person chocking, stand for help ... immediately....

Great job!!

With regard to choking, I am trying to think back to my lifesaving course in high school. When someone is choking, do they not cough? I sort of remember someone telling me if the person is still coughing itís a relatively good sign. It means they are still breathing and not choking.

Good job Goldtopper!

I've had to do the Heimlich on my Mom TWICE, when I was basically just a kid. Very scary. Learned it in Boy Scouts. (so by 'kid' I mean Jr. High/early H.S.)

Both times - separated by a couple years - were during her Birthday dinner! She eats way too fast; I still warn her when I see her eat.

Thank The Lord, indeed.

A girl I used to date in Cincy ran in the same crowd with Doc Heimlich's son. I was over his house and met him a few times - nice, very down-to-earth guy. If I remember right, he got high with us at one of the parties, but that's a lot of years ago.

He also had a theory about curing certain types of cancer by raising the body temperature, but I think he couldn't get the necessary approvals for testing and trails.

Great job! Glad everyone is ok.

Reminds me of the scene in Mrs. Doubtfire near the end of the movie where Robin Williams helps his exwife's boyfriend while choking on a piece of shrimp....

Well done! Easy to panic when it is family.

I did it once for a friend. I swear he must have swallowed half a T-bone steak. I suggested that maybe he try chewing the next time.
