Some of y'all know that my mom has been quite ill for quite a while. She's got more illnesses than OJ had lawyers (me trying to find light here).

Her main source of discomfort comes from congestive heart failure - made worse by a growing tear in her atrial valve. She also has severe lung and respiratory problems - courtesy of 50 years of 2 packs a day.

We've just returned from an appointment with a heart surgeon who told us what we've suspected for a while. My mom is just not healthy or strong enough to stand any type of surgery. At all.

We've been give an optimistic outlook of a year to 18 months, but the doctor doesn't seem to think she'll even make it that far.

Not the greatest news to get at Christmas time. We have a bunch of family coming in this weekend for a birthday party for my aunt. This will be a great time for everybody to come to terms and to enjoy what might be a final holiday season for my mom.

I guess what I'd like is to make everybody more appreciative of their own family and friends. Live is never long enough. Take each day for the gift that it is. Love and appreciate your brothers, sisters, family and friends.

Thank y'all for your prayers and thoughts.

"Rusty"

Sorry to hear about all of this. These words are very true. I just got news that a close friend of our family, who was diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year, is now back in the hospital with complications, and they say he has about 2 months to live.

I know how blessed she's been in the last few years to have you and Donna nearby when needed. Sorry it's not going well for her. Hope you all enjoy the birthday celebration.
It's another reminder of how much of a struggle life can be, will be at various points.
A reminder not to take happiness and good times for granted.
God bless her.

I am really sorry to hear that Rusty. You and your mom have my best wishes. Hopefully every moment will be fully utilized by you both.

I will take your words to heart and do some heavy-duty appreciating w/ my family at Christmas. But first, I've got some others to appreciate next week.

This is tough. I feel for you. It's a reality of life but it really hurts when it involves your mother or father. Hang in there.

So sorry to hear such sad news Rusty ... this will be the first Christmas without my Mother-in-law who passed just a couple of months ago ... she was the last survivor of both mine and my wife's parents so it is the end of an era within our family ... but then that is balanced by the blessing of our first grandchild last week ... and so the circle of life turns on ...

Best wishes to you and your family Rusty ... I am sure you will make this a Christmas to remember ...

Get at least one more opinion from another cardiac surgeon Rusty. In 1979 my Dad had an aortic aneurysm the size of a baseball and none of the Dr.'s up here would operate because they were sure he would die during surgery if they did, they sent him home and told him not to exert himself because if an auerysm ruptures you die. Even the Dr.'s in NYC would not try to operate. We consulted one of the best heart surgeons (Dr. DeBakey) at MD Anderson Hospital in Texas and he has the expertise and a 5% death rate with that type off surgery. My Dad could not even walk to the plane at the airport, they got him a wheelchair. The Doc did his surgery, he came out fine with at least a 20 year prognosis for survival. So, get more opinions Rusty.
