Elizabeth Edwards Dies at Age 61

CHRISTOPHER WEBER

Elizabeth Edwards died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer, The Associated Press and ABC News reported. She was 61.

On Monday her family announced that Edwards, who was briefly hospitalized over the Thanksgiving holiday, had stopped all cancer treatment.

She had been resting at home surrounded by family and friends.

Edwards, the estranged wife of John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and one-time presidential candidate, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004.
She recently wrote a message on her Facebook page that would end up being a farewell.

"You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope," she wrote. "These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined."

"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family," her family said in a statement. "We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life. On behalf of Elizabeth we want to express our gratitude to the thousands of kindred spirits who moved and inspired her along the way. Your support and prayers touched our entire family."

Farewell to a brave and dignified woman. I was never a fan of Sen Edwards, but she would have been a great first lady.

This is sad ... what a warrior she has been. May she rest peacefully and may her children find comfort in thier memories of her.

I heard in a news program this morning that she had been writing a personal diary for her children in the years since receiving her initial diagnosis of cancer ... a way of leaving something personal of herself for her children ... creating a permanent record of all of those memories of their times spent together here on earth, of lessons she would have wanted to share in person as a parent but might not have the luxury of time to make that personal sharing possible, of the hopes and dreams that she had wrapped around these children and their lives - past/present/future, and of her love for them and the joy they brought to her life. What a lovely legacy ... what a precious gift. She's had a hard road to follow ... with her health issues, suffering the loss of a child, having her personal life and marriage placed under a microscope for the world's viewing pleasure. I think she's shown remarkable grace in her life.

It's not easy to fight something like that in the public eye. I'm glad her suffering is over.

The woman was the epitomy of grace and dignity. I'm glad she's no longer suffering.

RIP Elizabeth....a courageous lady who dealt with the death of a child, betrayal by her husband and the rough and tumble. of politics. IMHO - this lady deserves respect

Mrs. Edwards was a brave woman who had to face many issues a lot of us haven't had to. This is very sad.
