A lot happened that year in music.


1970

January 14 - Diana Ross performs her last concert with the Supremes at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas before departing for a solo career. She introduces Jean Terrell to the audience as her replacement as lead singer of the group.


January 17 - The Doors record their album 'Absolutely Live' at the 'Felt Forum' in New York City.


January 24 - Robert Moog begins to market the 'Mini-Moog' Synthesizer.


February 28 - Eva Von Zeppelin, heiress of the airship designer, sues in an attempt to stop 'Led Zeppelin' from using the family name.


March - Simon & Garfunkel split up.


March 16 - Tammi Terrell, who sang many duets with Marvin Gaye, dies of a brain tumour at age 24.


April 9 - Paul McCartney announces the official breakup of the Beatles.


May 8 - The Beatles release the "Let It Be" album.


May 25 - Guitarist Peter Green leaves Fleetwood Mac and joins a religious order.


June 7 - The Who's 'Tommy' was performed at NY's Lincoln Center.


July 4 - Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" debutes on LA radio.


September 18 - Jimi Hendrix dies in the flat of Monika Nanneman in Notting Hill area of London, from inhalation of vomit caused by barbituate (Seconol) intoxication.


September 20 - Jim Morrison is found guilty of indecent exposure and profanity in a Miami, Florida courtroom.


October 3 - Janis Joplin dies of a herion overdose in room 105 of the 'Landmark Motor Hotel' in Hollywood California. Her body was found the next day, Oct.4. She was later cremated and her ashes were spread off the California coast.


November 28 -Marty Balin leaves Jefferson Airplane, a group he started in 1965, after being fed up with the drugs and groupies scene.


December 12 - Jim Morrison performs his last concert with the Doors at 'The Warehouse' in New Orleans.

Wasn't Jeremy Spencer (albiet, not in 1970) the one who left Mac and ended up joining a "religious order"?

In fact Green returned to FM in '71 when Spencer left.

August 25, 1970 Elton John stars his first tour of the USA with a series of performances at the Troubadour in LA

August 26-30, 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, which was the biggest rock festival of all time (Over 600,000) featuring the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Sly & The Family Stone, Ten Years After, Miles Davis, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, ELP, Moody Blues, Chicago, etc.

September 9, 1970 Death of Alan Wilson of Canned Heat

September 26, 1970 Eric Clapton meets Duane Allman after a show in in Miami

a pretty depressing year in the music world if you read the events. Also quite the crazy year on college campuses as I recall being in my sophomore year that April and May. What a time in history!!!

July 17 - First saw and heard the Allman Brothers Band at the Love Valley Festival. Who knew that over 40 years later I still would be following this band. Btw, met many "fellow travelers" along the way and became friends with many.

March 13th...Lefty Collins , on his 10th birthday, finds a $20.00 bill on the Rock Island Railroad tracks on his way back to school form lunchbreak. He stops at the Beverly Variety Store and buys 6 boxes of Lemonheads, which he puts in his pocket to munch on during school.....................

he gets busted..

But still has $19.40 left and buys a crapload of baseball cards on the way home..

And the great news is, you can still but a box of Lemonheads for a quarter!

That's a great story Lefty. I used to buy those Charms Pops for a nickel and take them to school and sell them for a quarter. I bought some recently in a store, 2 for a quarter!

Grateful Dead at Fillmore West
Mountain at Wollman Ice Rink, Central Park (there was a riot at that show)
Elvis at International Hotel in Vegas
