If you had to pick one RIGHT NOW - i.e., the band you prefer right now - which is it?

For me, it's Gregg solo.

Anyone else?

I prefer the ABB but am glad to say I will be seeing BOTH in teh next 4 months! Gregg surely does sing better with his own band IMHO because of their lower volume. I also appreciate the shorter drum solo. ;-)

Gotta say the brothers.

Love Gregg's solo stuff but to me it's a night of great songs in a relaxed manor vs the full on assault, anything can happen vibe of the brothers.

That said, I'm really looking forward to Gregg's new record. What I've heard of it sounds very nice.

I am an old school Allman Brothers fan. My favorite (well, duh) was the original line-up and then Warren and Dickey. As long as Gregg is in there I will always like the Bros. as a band.

Gregg's solo stuff is also awesome as it is centered around (well, duh) Gregg, who I guess is the real reason I like the ABB in general.

I'll go back to sleep now......

Gregg Allman and Friends for me. I like the smaller venues. It is more up close and personal.

I love the ABB, but mainly because of Gregg.

Well being GA&F came to No. Calif annually, I would chose them. You can like a band all you want and enjoy "product" but the live setting is what music is really all about. At least me, tha is what spins my top.

Wonder what gonna play out now being I moved from No. Calif to "no mans land" as far as live music goes. My spirit is at peace with my surroundings and perspective on life has changed somewhat. I highly recommend it.

Well.....I like them both. Completely different vibes. Gregg seems to play smaller venues; the Independent in SF, House of Blues in NO, perfect spots to get right next to the stage and really see the musicians up close. He doesn't vary the setlists the way the ABB does, but it's all good. I hope to catch him as he supports his new release, but so far his tour and my whereabout's don't seem to match up.
On the other hand, an Evening With has a special magic that can't be touched; Chastain, The Saenger, THE BEACON; when the house lights go out and the band hits it's first note, chills go up my spine. I'm stoked for March Madness this year.

This is kind of a tangent, but I'd love to see Gregg with T-Bone Burnett's Studio All-Stars.

I certainly have nothing against Gregg's current touring band, full of first-class talent to a man. Low Country Blues just sounds so good, and I'd love to see Gregg play some intimate shows with the players from those sessions. Dr. John on piano and Gregg on B-3 is something I'd love to see live before I die. Talk about the dream team!

At the end of the day, I'm a rocker at heart who loves nothing more than to hear Whipping Post cranked up to 11 at a big rock show with 100,000 of my closest friends. The Allman Brothers Band is more designed to scratch that itch than Gregg's solo work, so I guess I'd have to pick the ABB if forced to choose between the two.

Why is this a question of ABB "vs" Gregg?
Love them both -- go to see them both.

Yes, Gregg does some of the same songs w/ his own band (well, he wrote a lot of them and has put his vocal stamp on many others) but -- they are quite different musical experiences. That's a good thing.

Not everything is a competition, at least it shouldn't be.
Why choose one or the other? I don't see the point.
It's not like the two bands ever perform live at the same time ...

I know this will sound weird, but to me, it's a bit like apples and oranges. Gregg's solo music is very different from the ABB.

I love them both though.

But I got into Gregg's solo from being an ABB fan. So I have to go with them collectively. Plus I'm a big fan of almost every member they have ever had, so how can I compare?

Gregg's my favorite member of the band, and I prefer songs he wrote or sings. But, I like them surrounded by any incarnation of the band better than GA&F.

Love Gregory's solo stuff especially "Laid Back" and seeing him live iin a solo setting is always nice, but it's The ABB by a landslide for me. I need to be in a certain type of mood for Gregg's solo material, but I am ALWAYS in the mood for a fulllblown Brothers set.

And for the record, besides the original lineup, the current band of the past 11 years with Warren and Derek is my favorite by a pretty wide margin. I think the current group is phenomenal on so many levels and they never cease to amaze me with their fresh and Jazzy approach to jamming, overall consistency and shear power. They are still a major musical force that refuses to compromise.

Having seen this lineup in CT this month, and many times previously, I often feel the same way. Then, I listen to something with Dickey on it, and I miss his style. This has been several great bands.

To me it's easily ABB although I really love Gregg Allman & Friends. So why the easy choice? Because until recently, Gregg's setlists had become pretty tired. I mean, do I really need to hear him do Dreams, Midnight Rider and Statesboro again, even if it's a different arrangement? NO! I haven't seen him since June 2009 but that show was very heavy on ABB material.........the three I already mentioned, also Melissa and Don't Keep Me Wonderin' if I'm not mistaken. The last reviews I read though said he was mixing it up a little more since then. People have used the excuse here that everyone in the band has other projects going on and they don't have time to rehearse. I don't think they should go out on the road unless they do. Maybe he'll be doing some from the new record next time around. I sure love the R&B/soul direction he goes in, though, with GA & Friends.........stuff like Turn On Your Lovelight always knocks me out.
