Willie Nelson Busted For Pot At Sierra Blanca Checkpoint
November 26, 2010

EL PASO, Texas -- Country music legend Willie Nelson was arrested Friday morning in Sierra Blanca, Texas at a Border Patrol checkpoint for allegedly possessing 6 ounces of marijuana.

According to Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West, Nelson was traveling in his tour bus from California to Austin when Nelson was detained by Border Patrol agents at about 9 a.m. Friday. Hudspeth County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the checkpoint and then booked Nelson into the Hudspeth County Jail on a $2,500 bond. He posted the bond and was on his way back Austin, West said.

In late January of this year, six of Nelson's band and crew members were busted in North Carolina for allegedly possessing moonshine and marijuana in a vehicle they were in. They were issued citations.

Also in January of this year, Nelson's tour bus was stopped at the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol check point for five hours and searched, according to a blog post by Nelson's daughter at the time of the incident. The group received one citation, but she did not say what it was for.

Authorities searched Nelson's tour bus back in 2006 in Louisiana and found about a pound-and-a-half of marijuana and mushrooms. Nelson was charged with a misdemeanor.

You'd think he find or create better hiding places in his bus.

The guy is totally outspoken about his usage of it. Maybe that makes him a target.

When is this going to stop. I do not want my tax money funding law enforcements harassment a 77 year old man.
This is ridiculous.
I would not be surprised if numerous thefts were occurring around El Paso at the time of Willie being arrested.

Nice use of law enforcement. Thanks for protecting us from a 77 year old country and western performer. Great Job!

Willie needs to get a prescription. Remember, the War on Drugs is what Sam Kinison referred to as the War On Americans Who Have Drugs. I don't even use drugs and I think this behavior is all **** . Legalize it, regulate it, tax it. Or make life in America so wonderful that no one will want to use drugs.

And that he was close to the border, where unfortunately they do look for contraband. He should hire another plain vehicle to haul his stuff. Willie's bus is like a rolling NORML billboard and a tad obvious.

Willie, how long would it have taken you to score in Austin?! 5 min?

It's been rough and rocky travelin',
But I'm finally standing upright on the ground.
And after takin' several readings,
I'm surprised to find my mindís still fairly sound.

Almost busted in Laredo,
But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose,
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave,
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes.

Copied out of sequence but i guess the words still have some meaning for Willie.

I'd say the fact that his tour bus has the name "Willie Nelson" on it makes him guaranteed "pay dirt" for the Feds.

Here is an idea for Willie. Quit smoking and posessing pot and he will not have trouble with the cops. Or he could spend spend 2 years in prison. That might get his limited attention.

Regardless of "laws on the books", it really makes one wonder about the priorities and the enforcers. Don't we have more serious issues in this country to deal with? Let Willie do his thing. Let Willie be Willie.

I think cops are as starstruck as anyone. They probably want to be able to say "Yeah, I busted Willie Nelson for pot one or two or three times."

Unlike JPB, I have actually smoked pot with Willie. Farm Aid 7 n New Orleans, with Jefferson Parish law enforcement standing at the bus door. The late High Sheriff of Jefferson Parish, Harry Lee, was a personal friend of Willie's and he would not let his officers bother his close friend. He did, however, get his officers on the bus to meet and take pictures with Willie. Somewhere around New Orleans, there are photos of JP officers and Willie. Willie in the middle, flanked on each side by an officer and the stash laying on the front lounge table. All day, while the show played, a line of officers at Willie's bus would patiently wait their turn to step on board and have their picture taken.
Every time the bus door opened, a cloud of smoke would roll out followed by two JP officers leaving and two going on the bus. The entire Spin Doctors entourage stood on the back of the stage and watched the scene in utter amazement, because they had been warned that they "ain't Willie". So, they eventually went to Willie's bus as well.
Blowing down Poydras with David Anderson (Willie's manager) in an undercover Crown Victoria was a trip. David used the siren and lights to roll through a few intersections on the way to Mother's for lunch. The owner of Mother's was at first not amused when a car pulls up onto the sidewalk at the front door and four scruffy dudes and a cloud of smoke get out of the car. He did an about face when David said the magic words "Our friend, Harry Lee said this is a good place to eat" He ran inside and yelled at the fifty or so people waiting in line to "get the hell outta the way, Harry's friends are having lunch."
Not the biggest Farm Aid I've worked, but by far the most fun.

Thanks for sharing the cool stories! I've been to Mother's. Unlike you, there was no cloud of smoke and I had to wait, but it was worth the wait.
