Has there been any talk about another Frogwings tour, or has that band been put to bed? One of the best shows I ever saw, when they toured back in 1997...I think I liked the pre-Popper version better, w/o his harmonica work (not that there's ANY problem w/ his harmonica, but there was more room for guitars in the band w/o it)

I think it's been put to bed, though perhaps not officially. The main reason for the creation of the band was so Butch could play with Derek, so that point's been moot for 4 years now. And Oteil, Derek and Jimmy really don't have the time, between all their other projects. Would be nice if they could put it back together and do it again. And Edwin McCain has since left RCA (I think...whatever major he was signed with), so there's no contractual issues with him recording outside his solo gig. So if they were to do it again (which they won't), my vote would be for McCain over Popper....for a number of reasons, only one being the reason jmintz points out about sonic room for the guitars/keys/flute.

I think in terms of vocals, Edwin is superior to John Popper...he has one of the better voices out there in the industry today--perhaps I'm biased though being from Charleston where Edwin's band was put together!

I was just talking about this yesterday. I think I may be the only one that actually likes Popper over McCain in Frogwings....I like Popper's songs much better....Either way, it was a smoking band!

I believe Charlesinator agrees with you.

Yes, I think Chaswell is in agreement there. Like Charlesinator probably is hoping for, if Frogwings reunites I hope they work up a version of "Rockin' Horse" - just so we don't forget how that tune goes.

There are lots of upsides of all the musical cross-breeding we have in the ABB family. I guess the downside is that almost nobody has room to add more projects to their schedules.

I was a Frogwings fanatic with Edwin. I saw them twice in Atlanta around 1997. One at the original Cotton Club on P'Tree St. and the other at Smith's Olde Bar. All I can say that it was an all star band that I couldn't get enough of.....all in a small setting!

I still have the Atl show on cassette..... a bit mufffled but great memories!

I too like Edwin with Frogwings better than Popper. I don't even listen to the Popper version anymore.

I'm one of a kind, an original, unique, the only one....yeah!

It's not that I don't like Edwin, I just like some of Popper's tunes better....if you can honestly tell me you don't tap your toes (or your tummy in some cases) to Hurdy Gurdy Fandango, well then, more power to you

Popper definitely brought some great songs to the group, but I think with Edwin he kinda stepped out of the way and let Jimmy and Derek take over...when I saw them in Gainesville '97, Edwin only had his guitar onstage for a few songs, and was barely audible when he did. I feel Popper's harmonica takes a lot of emphasis off of the guitars at times.

Popper also ruined some of the songs when he changed the lyrics to the same tunes they had been doing when Edwin was singing....like "Ganja." How much dumber lyrics could anyone write? And they also stopped doing some really cool covers when Edwin left ("Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" and "Don't Change Horses" come to mind). And that doesn't even go to the fact that Popper is a ball-hog with solos and doesn't know when (or how to) get out of the way and just shut up on the harp for a second. His playing "rhythm harp" over the guitar solos really got in the way of Kofi's keyboard work....and Kofi does some amazing chordal work behind soloists. Oft-overlooked I think, but Kofi added a lot to Frogwings, as he did with ARU and does with DTB. I just don't think the addition of Popper was worth the tradeoff for the couple of originals he brought to the band.

And none of these comments are meant to be personal towards any poster here....I just really don't like Popper. I hope he misses the ABB Beacon run again this year too.

Yeah I really like FRogwings a lot - surprise! Caught a couple of shows at Wetlands in NYC.
It was the Popper lineup though...He does seem to hog at times and his voice doesn't do it for me either. The MUSIC though was spectacular, Nice-Jams and cool songs. Haven't heard The E. McCain lineup at all so I can't compare. One thing is for sure, that a lot of talent on that stage! If FRogwings was a fulltime project, they would be hard to beat. They should just do all instrumental pieces and can Popper...Kickin Bach is a GREAT song!

No, I'm pretty split. I like both equally, I love certain songs with Edwin (WIND BEFORE THE RAIN) is amazing. I didn't care for what Popper did to that. But you can't beat "Pattern" which is with Popper and no one could do that song better. I made a nice compilation splitting the two versions of the band from various soundboards. It's nice because sometimes you get some killer harp playing, you get a change of singers, you get some nice dual guitar work with some nice rhythm acoustic. - What cannot be denied is that no matter who is fronting that band, the music behind him (or her) is absolutely phenomenal. All those great originals!
