Yes, it is true......
The fans forced the altering of the traditional ABB sound in 1981....

Rolling Stone 9/17/81

"Allmans Play For 'Lude Fans"

"Better gigging through chemistry: the Allman Brothers Band, high on the charts with "Straight From The Heart" their first hit single in many a moon, say that their audience's new choice in recreational drugs has forced them to revamp the marathon stage shows that made them famous. "Crowds used used to be more into the music because they were on acid," posts drummer Butch Trucks. "Now they take quaaludes and mellow out". What to do? "We play about four acoustic songs each concert," offers guitarist Dicky (sp) Betts, "and we've cut the show down to two and a half hours." The group, which now includes David "Frankie" Toler in place of departed Jai Johanny Johanson, hopes to record another live LP this fall.

So kids, what we take at Beacon shows in 04 could very well shape the sound of the next album! Maybe 75-79 were dead years because so much coke was around..... couldn't do southernspeedpeach music......

For the sake of the music I will take any/all the drugs that it requires. Maybe if we take different drugs each night we can compare the effect it had on the music. Anybody willing to fund this experiment?

So what drug in 1981 made audiences want to see a boppin', bearded synth-dwarf jiving on stage with the ABB, wearing a strap-on keyboard????

More to the point, is it still available? Has it been banned? If not, can we ensure that it gets banned?

Just wondering...

Experiment? Nah, just a way of life....

yeah, the shows were altered because of drug taking, but not the audience's drug taking....

I'm not sure, but it appears as if alot of other bands' audiences were partaking in that same drug during that period....

well, i think the best way to attack this is to think in terms of which one will cure the previous nights hangover best.

perhaps we can do a drug pollyanna of some sort. the person with the MDMA will no doubt be the most popular

If I haven't thrown that monkey off my back by then, sign me up for experimenting with a little extra caffeine next time I see the Allman Brothers.

I feel bad for Mike Lawler, if he ever reads what we write here. We have not been kind to him... Of course he was not kind to the music! - I don't think "Straight From the Heart" was really a big hit. Although I do have the clip of them performing it on Solid Gold. That's a fun bit!

When we used to watch him on stage, I kind of felt bad for us...

I remember saying to myself when he was on stage with The ABB... Ok, who is this guy?
Why is he up there? Why do they want him up there? ... And most important, Is Duane looking down saying "this is not what I had in mind".
