Last night they chalked a Micheln man in front of our place, Taste of Peru!!!!

There was a chalk outline of the Michelin Man on the sidewalk beside Spacca Napoli pizzeria Wednesday morning, and it's safe to say the staffers and owners were overjoyed.

There was an identical symbol in front of Frontera Grill, and it's likely that owner Rick Bayless was less than thrilled.

The chalk Michelin Man symbols indicate that these restaurants, and many more, had received the Bib Gourmand award, a Michelin Guide distinction awarded to restaurants judged to offer very good food at a very good value. For Michelin's purposes, a "very good value" means an appetizer and entree, plus a glass of wine, will cost $40 or less.

"The Bib Gourmand is really a great honor," says Jean-Luc Naret, director of the Michelin Guides. "It signifies they do good cuisine at a very reasonable price. Especially in these recessionary times, people are looking for a good deal. Some restaurant owners would prefer a Bib Gourmand award to a star."

The recipients of Michelin's coveted stars (even one star is a high honor, and the maximum three stars indicates a world-class restaurant) will be announced Nov. 17 (the Michelin Guide Chicago itself will go on sale the following day). But, as they did previously in San Francisco and New York this year, the Michelin people announced the Bib Gourmand awards a week early.

Under cover of darkness Tuesday night, Michelin representatives stealthily sprayed the image of Bibendum (the formal name of the Michelin Man, from a Latin phrase meaning, "Now, let's drink") on the sidewalks in front of 46 Chicago restaurants. Wednesday morning, those restaurant owners received a very nice surprise.

But not a star. And for that reason, seeing the chalk stencil of Bibendum (meaning there are no stars in the offing next week) might have been a little disappointing, The hotter-than-hot restaurant Girl & the Goat received a Bib Gourmand designation, and it's possible that chef/partner Stephanie Izard had higher hopes. The Bristol, Frontera Grill, Green Zebra, Otom, Perennial and Publican are all Bib Gourmand recipients that could make a case for star status.

Naret disputes the notion of a Bib Gourmand representing some sort of consolation prize.

"These restaurants represent the inspectors' favorites," he says. "I call them the gems of Chicago, restaurants that deserve to be recognized for good food."

Among the people who most likely are elated are Bill Kim, who received Bib Gourmand awards for UrbanBelly and Belly Shack, and the husband-wife team of Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, who picked up twin awards for Nightwood and Lula's Cafe. Riccardo Michi has to be thrilled with the Bib Gourmand bestowed on his Riccardo Trattoria; likewise Carlos Gaytan, for the recognition his Mexique restaurant received. For Germain Roignant, who has operated La Creperie since 1972--30 of those years with his late wife Sara--the Bib Gourmand is an unexpected honor.

They're undoubtedly popping corks in Bridgeport, where Chinese restaurant Han 202 and American restaurant Nana each received a Bib Gourmand, and in Hyde Park, where La Petite Folie was recognized. The award given to M. Henry, in Andersonville, has special significance because, Naret says, "I don't think any city is as good for breakfast as Chicago."

And in a town that has seen a boom in barbecue restaurants and Neapolitan pizzerias during the last 18 months, the Bib Gourmand award has to be sweet validation for Spacca Napoli, Smoque BBQ and Twin Anchors.

The winners included more than 20 types of cuisine, including Nepalese (Cumin), Thai (Opart Thai House, Thai Village), Mexican (De Cero, DeColores, Frontera, Los Nopales, Mexique, Mixteco Grill) and Indian (Jaipur, Raj Darbar, Veerasway). The inspectors recognized new places (Ceres' Table, Gilt Bar), and established veterans (Bistro 110, La Creperie, West Town Tavern). They picked very inexpensive restaurants (Ann Sather, Smak-Tak) and at least one place, Deca in the Ritz-Carlton, where spending less than $40 for two courses and a drink would be a bit of a challenge.

The list of Bib Gourmand winners was finalized at the beginning of September, Naret says. Thus the award for Kith & Kin was determined weeks before the owners fired original chef David Carrier, and the award for Mado was decided long before founding chefs Rob and Allie Levitt quit and the owners announced a completely new approach for the restaurant.

Congratulations, Julie and Cesar!!! Bib Gourmand and Michelin recognition is quite an honor ... you are going to have hungry foodies with their Michelin guides lined up at your door! This will really get TOP recognition with travellers, also, who depend on Michelin to guide them to great dining establishments while on the road. This could not happen to a finer restaurant (as many here can attest - thanks again for giving us somewhere to meet and taste some of your amazing food pre-Crossroads ) or to a nicer couple of folks. Bravo!

Many agree about Hot Doug's. They are deserving. Never ceases to amaze me how my little restaurant with Allman Brothers photos mixed in with Machhu Pichu scenes continues to get such amazing press. Guess the peachhead and the peruvian make a good team.

I will surely stop by on my next Chicago visit, menu looks excellent! I am in Chicago fairly often and I have a rotation of restaurants I have to hit: Hot Doug's, my favorite burrito place Taqueria el Asadero, Pizano's or Lou Malnati for pizza... Will have to add Taste Of Peru to the list.
