Again listening to Fillmore East I came to thinking--
There are just some bass players who took the instrument to a new level by playing the bass like a lead guitar, wrapping bass lines around all the other instruments and giving it a life of its own. Guys like Berry, Allen Woody, Phil Lesh, Jack Bruce and Jack Kassady are just a few who are/were unbelievable and made the bass guitar its own instrument by taking it to a higher level---so much more than just playing the root notes and laying a basic foundation. I am in awe listening to these guys and would love to be able to play a bass like they do.
Who else fits this bill?

Entwistle---unbelievable, truly unbelievable.
I saw The Who in Philadelphia in the 80's and stood in front of him the whole night through. I was mesmorized beyond belief. How did I forget to include him in my original post? One of the absolute best there ever was

Stanley Clarke
His solo on the last RTF tour was perhaps the highlight of the show, and given that band, that's saying something

Here's one you've probably never heard of: Jassen Wilber, the bass player for Bernard Allison. Best little-known bass player I've heard, and he definately can play it like a guitar. |
