Watching some stuff on youtube, got me thinking about non-original members of classic bands that made a huge mark on those group. Love to hear some of your favorite non-original members from established bands....the ones who helped them make some of their best music.

For me in the Allman Brothers, I think of Warren Haynes & Chuck Leavell as the most important non-originals. Chuck's tenure was short but made a huge impact on the band while releasing some of their most memorable & highest charting material. Warren has helped them stay relevant over the last 20 years recording some of my alltime favorite ABB tracks.

Some others:
Steve Gaines - Skynryd
Ronnie James Dio - Sabbath
Steve Howe - Yes
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple [DOH! meant Roger Glover who may fit the bill in Rainbow too]
Lindsey Buckingham - Fleetwood Mac

Next...

does the fact joe perry was not the original aerosmith guitar player count?

the classic lineup of GNR was not the first lineup

the classic lineup of twisted sister was not the original

neil young added to CSN

tommy shaw-styx

sammy hagar- van halen

phil anselmo- pantera

i just listed some non original members so if you think those bands are classic/legendary or you think the members were key thats a different story

Yeah, I meant after they were established. Yeah, many bands had rotating members before their first album or before anyone heard of them.

To their respective eras, yes. I added TC because of what he added to my favorite album, Live Dead.

Joe was the original guitarist. Tyler joined his band with Tom Hamilton. Brad Whitford was not in the original lineup. Ray Tabano was the original second guitarist. Brad Whitford is definitely a key non-original member although he was in before they made any albums.
