I haven't done this in quite a while so let's start with this question. If you have to pick one studio release, what is Mule's best? At one time I would have said Dose. I think now that the song craft combined with the production and sound leads me to "Life Before Insanity." You get so used to hearing the songs live you forget what the original studio recording is like. Today "Wandering Child" from LBI popped up on my MP3 player. That is a great track. And the whole album is like that. I vote for Life Before Insanity as the Mule's greatest work.

There's Dose, then there's everything else. The lyrics and music on Dose are better than all else Mule. I like LBI, but every time I hear "Bigelow the Gigolo", I cringe. Dose is it, followed by the first one, then everything else.

"Fallen Down" is one of my 2 or 3 favorite Warren compositions. Along with Wandering Child and Bad Little Doggie LBI does it for me. But Does is also an incredible album. As is Gov't Mule.

For me, Fallen Down is a bathroom break at a live show and a skip on my cd/ipod. BLD is lacking too. I loved Woody's thumping on BLD, but the lyrics are ehhh. As are 75% of the lyrics that Warren has written post-Wood. I agree with what someone posted in another thread....that Warren needs another HONEST producer for his releases. His wife doesn't count. I still love Warren. He's a great musician, person, AND writer. But he's spread himself thin and his last few releases have been subpar.

I'm hoping that Warren's next "solo" album is filled with some inspired stuff that he has collected over the years. Bring on George Porter Jr. and crew!

And there is why I don't bother anymore, because some blowhard will let you know that his opinion is more valid than other peoples.

I think Bad Little Doggie is probably one of my two or three all time favorite Warren compositions. Just a great great song. My all time favorite Mule song will always be Blind Man in the Dark. Fallen Down is a beautiful haunting song in my opinion. I like both the Mule version and the solo acoustic version Warren does.

Mentioned at one of the two Aspen solo shows he did in 08. I never heard them and I don't believe he has ever performed them. Which is why I would like to hear them.

New subject:

What's everyone's thoughts on Warren's new band and what it potentially means to our beloved Mule?

I don't think it means anything for Mule except a year off the road. Warren loves the Mule. He will work with this band for many years to come, God willing. While I always prefer the sound of Gov't Mule, I am looking forward to seeing Warren cut loose with some soul music. This is just a touring band and will likely disband after 2011.

Having the privilege to see them several times a year for the past 7 years, *I* need some time off from all the @ss kicking I've received!

I can feel a small run in Nov-Dec '11 as a warm up for the Christmas Jam (maybe), New Years (likely) and Jamaica (99%).

I like the songs a lot. Great riffs and all and they are fun live. But lyrically I think (and I say this as one of Warren's hugest fans in the world) they sound like the band came up with the tune and he went into a back room to throw some lyrics together. Oh wait that IS what happened. Compare the lyrics to songs like No Need to Suffer or Banks of the Deep End or even Slackjaw Jezebel (Wheel's turning faster and I know I got to jump off. Guess I'm weighing the fire against the fear.")

The best song lyrically is "Forevermore" and of course that is an older song, already written. It is also probably the best song on the album, in my opinion.
