Just had my 7th job interview in 2 years since my layoff from the phone company October 30, 2008. I came home from a 9 hr shift busting my ass for little money, to find the standard letter saying thanks but no thanks from my latest interview last Wednesday. I understand there are a lot of people in my situation but not sure how much more rejection I can take. I am currently on 9 job boards and submit to jobs everyday. Just stuck in a rut, live at home with parents in a 9 x 11 room, I call it the jail cell, I am close to 40 and feel like such an idiot for not being in my own place and having some money to share with my kids.

It's easy to say, but really try not to feel that way No1ToRunWith -- I've been there too -- from a background where people live eat breath & sleep their jobs, I too lost my job & had to "move back home" -- it totally sucked & the self-esteem does not recover easily --

just believe in your own goodness, & that Many people are in the same boat -- hell I could be tomorrow for all I know -- some people are not cut out to excel in the workaday world

all the best -- people know you for the good person you are

well Eric, someday we can have a beer and I can share some stories with you..
but for now, i can tell you for certain that (having just come through some personal struggles) one way out is to start focusing on what you have..not what you don't have..

it is very hard to do...but your attitude, like anything else is a very contagious thing...

you are alive..
you are healthy..
you are FAR FROM JAIL
you have people in your life that love you

for 28 days, say those things to yourself everytime you get frustrated
try to do something nice each day for a stranger, no matter how small or insignificant you think it is (it may mean the world to them)
look at your skill set, and if it is not giving you the results you need, start to slowly upgrade or change it...

it is ALWAYS toughest to have faith when you need to have it the most..

but that is how dreams come true...
when you are the only one that sees it, when you are the only one that believes

hang in there...enjoy your life to the best of your ability.. believe in yourself..
believe in yourself..
believe in yourself..
believe in yourself..

Hang in there Eric. Like Lefty said, try to focus on what you DO have. This is something I struggle with daily. Positive attitude is everything.

Hi,

I am pretty new here and I really don't know if I should be responding to a non music related thread but I guess it is within the rules.

You mentioned that you were on a number of job boards. My niece is in Human Resources. She has said many times in the past few years that jobs boards in many regards are a waste of time. Far to many people use them and many companies that hire from them are overwhelmed with the number of replies that they never even look at 99% of the resumes sent. She said that it is often a good idea to bring your resume personally to the company and ask to see a person who is involved with hiring. Many times their name is listed on the job board posting. At worst you won't see anyone and the receptionist will pass your resume on. There is also a good chance you may see someone. Keep in mind that the people doing the hiring are often overworked as they are part of a staff that has been cut.
More often than you may think you do them a favor by just showing up. You show initiative by doing something different than the average person who just hopes for a reply that most likely will not come. You also make their job easier by presenting yourself. That helps a great deal. They may just like you and even if you only get as far as the receptionist that person may very well pass on a compliment as to how you conducted yourself to them.

As far as not having much money I read a saying many years ago that reads, "Net worth does not equal self worth" Yes money is important and there is a sense of pride in doing well financially but there are many other things besides money that rate where we are as a person. Don't let those things you have going for you be blocked out by how much you have in the bank. In time the financial picture will recover and then fall off again in the future. Who we are as people can always grow in the eyes of others who know us and most importantly to ourselves.

I really am not very qualified to be doling out advice but I have learned a few things over the years and maybe this may help a tiny bit.

Best of luck,

William

My brother is in the same situation.

Had a decent job in radio, got a promotion to Westwood One, then laid off.

Over-qualified for any local radio jobs, under qualified for any TV other than on air talent.

Unemployment running out, took a job he hates at a car dealer.

Two days later got a letter saying his unemployment was extended.

Too late, working job from hell.

At least he has band gigs on the weekends.

I do hiring for a 40 person staff. Timing has more to do with things than anything. If a person walks in or inquires about a job and I have an opening their odds increase dramaticly. I always look for a fresh resume rather than one that has been sitting around six months. I agree that going in person also increases your odds rather than mailing it in or applying online.

i will amend it Eric..picture yourself on a ladder..

a ladder that has you dangling over a cliff...

don't just hang in there..

reach down to a place you never knew you had and start climbing back up with all you have..

for you
for your kids

do it with a smile on your face and thank God that you have a chance to climb..

I'm telling you man, it works..

Running On Faith

Lately I've been running on faith
What else can a poor boy do?
But my world will be right
When love comes over you

Lately I've been talking in my sleep
I can't imagine what I'd have to say
Except my world will be right
When love comes back your way

I've always been
One to take each and every day
Seems like by now
I'd find a love who cares just for me

Then we'd go running on faith
All of our dreams would come true
And our world will be right
When love comes over me and you

Then we'd go running on faith
All of our dreams would come true
And our world will be right
When love comes over me and you
When love comes over you

Yes, it could be. You've got a roof over your head and food to eat. I only work part time, am in debt up to my eyeballs and just incurred over $1500 in vet bills.

There's not a damn thing I can do about the bad stuff. I can only be grateful for what I have and Keep on Truckin'.

Eric, I can't ad much more to what the others have already said. Lefty got it right. Be thankful for what you do have, including those two gorgeous children you have. You may be having feelings of inadequacy as a father, but all your kids know right now is that you are their daddy and they love you very much, and they know you love them the same way.

This may sound unusual, but if you want a moral and spiritual boost, go volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen. It's not that you will see people whose situations are perhaps worse than yours, but when you volunteer, you will feel lifted up knowing that you are doing something to help others.
