God Damn! I had never seen this before. I feel bad for John Mayer in Video 1 haha He NEVER STOOD A CHANCE! lol Derek was just amazing. Everyone, including Robert Randolph, just wanted to see what Derek would do next.

I love how that whole thing seemed to be pretty impromptu, little to no rehearsal, and Derek could pick up on what Robert and the band were going to do instantly. You could tell John was struggling a little bit in the first video to get a word in.

Yeah, these videos really remind me why I don't like John Mayer, just how it goes for me.
I love the part in the second video where Randolph just shakes his head while smiling and watching Derek

I actually think John Mayer did a really good job considering his position at the time. Around then he was just an acoustic pop idol. He probably didn't know who Derek or RR were at the time and he probably didn't know what to expect. If were in his position I would have been completely floored by them and incredibly intimidated.

He has definitely improved since then and I would really love to see him and Derek collaborate. Mayer is actually a very talented songwriter and guitarist.

Actually, John Mayer was getting a lot of praise at that time for his electric guitar playing. The guy went to Berklee for god sakes to learn guitar. It's not like he only played acoustic up until this point. He was very skilled in electric guitar in 2002 as well, listen to his live album "Any Given Thursday" which was released at around the same time.

That being said, he was most definitely intimidated because he is a lot better than what he shows in this video. Video 1 for example, his first solo isn't even really a solo. He just plays jazzy chords and and Robert eventually says "WTF" and takes over the rest of John's solo. Then you can see John lean over and say "Hey man, I wasn't done" And Robert's thinking "Yes you were, that was really boring compared to what Derek and I are about to do" haha

What i love about this video is that this is far from being the best we've heard of Derek, yet he still blows everyone on that stage.

LOL You might want to rephrase that. Even if some of them might enjoy it.
